Gossip the idle talk, fact or rumour about the personal or private affairs of others flourishes in our workplaces and neighbourhoods. Hollywood celebrity gossip has always fascinated fans and profits magazines, books & papers. Robert Mitchum earned a reputation as a notorious womanizer, and almost every woman he ever shared a film set with was rumoured to be having an affair with him . Whatever the truth, he remained married to his lovely wife Dorothy for 57 years. Ava Gardner once said... "I think that every girl who ever worked with Bob fell in love with him and I was no exception." Mitchum took it all in his stride..."I kept the same suit for six years and the same dialogue. They just changed the title of the picture and the leading lady. "There are all kinds of rumors about me and they're all true, every one of them. You can make some up if you want." In the 30 years 1946-1976 he worked with the top female stars, the loveliest leading ladies of the day Dorothy McGuire ... Jane Russell ... Lizabeth Scott ... Ann Blyth ... Susan Hayward ... Jean Simmons ... Linda Darnel ... Marilyn Monroe ... Teresa Wright ... Olivia de Havilland ... Shelley Winters ... Gloria Grahame ... Jan Sterling ... Geneviève Page ... Ursula Thiess ... Deborah Kerr ... Rita Hayworth ... Shirley MacLaine ... Elsa Martinelli ... Elizabeth Taylor ... Mia Farrow ... Charlotte Rampling ... Jeanne Moreau ... Katharine Hepburn ... Laraine Day ... Ingrid Thulin ... Ava Gardner Faith Domergue ... Greer Garson ... Jane Greer ... Loretta Young ... Barbara Bel Geddes ... Myrna Loy ... Janet Leigh not all were pleasant experiences ... "I gave up being serious about making pictures around the time I made a film with Greer Garson and she took one hundred and twenty-five takes to say no" Does Robert Mitchum hold some sort of infamous record for Hollywood affairs ? Are there any other stars male or female that have shared top billing with so many different star opposites ? Any other juicy titbits ?

Tallulah Bankhead was a gossip columnists dream with her outrageous personality, devastating wit, and for her tempestuous, and flamboyant lifestyle. She described herself as "ambisextrous and is famous for remarking on accepting her roll in Devil and the Deep (1932) ... "Dahling, the main reason I accepted [the part] was to f#*k that divine Gary Cooper!"

There are stories about Mitchum and Katharine Hepburn not hitting it off at all well when they worked together in Undercurrent. One such has Mitchum - attempting to position himself in her sightline as she took her mark for a closeup surrounded by lights, camera and crew - asking, "Can you see me, Miss Hepburn?" She reportedly replied, "I never could, Mr. Mitchum."
Hollywood's had plenty of "bad boys," the careers of some of whom were saved by studios keeping their private behaviors out of the press, and others whose careers didn't survive them. Errol Flynn was perhaps the first to openly and successfully exploit a "bad boy" rep, but Mitchum might have been the first home-grown one to do so.

Avant-garde filmmaker and notorious Hollywood scandal-spreader Kenneth Anger cashed in on the publics insatiable thirst for behind the scenes Classic Film Star gossip. His sensationalist and exploitive books Hollywood Babylon Vol 1 & Vol 2 were very popular & profitable and remain so. The books especially Vol 1, first published in France in 1959, however have been criticized and denounced for the many falsehoods they contain. The non factual entries have unfortunately lead to many false rumours of past stars which have now become urban legends...

I take the Mitchum talk with several grains of salt. Nothing against Big Bob but he liked to spin a yarn and he seemed to inspire others to do same. As to classic era male stars who presumably bedded all or most their leading ladies, I've read about so many like that I'm disinclined to believe most of what I've read. Maybe true in some cases,--most?--there's so much out there...
