Licorice Trivia healthyeating.sfgate.com/ingredients-black-licorice-11529.htmlThe Flavoring As counterintuitive as it might sound, black licorice candy sold in the U.S. generally contains very little -- or no -- real licorice. Often much or all of the flavor comes from anise seed, which has a similar though less complex flavor. Real licorice root extract can be problematic for some candy lovers, because its active ingredient -- glycyrrhizin -- is a steroid-like substance that can cause high blood pressure or heart arrhythmias when eaten regularly in large amounts. It's more of a problem in Europe, where real licorice is more widely used in candy-making. American manufacturers sometimes use "deglycyrrhized" licorice, which alters the licorice molecules to eliminate that effect.

Of course, is there actually anyone out there who doesn't? Well, as of the most recent posting, there are at least 8 people who are NOT fans of that sticky black stuff (like (supposedly) edible tar). Ollie, as far as other colors/flavors of licorice go, maybe the red stuff (in my case, Red Vines pseudo-raspberry flavor) shouldn't be called licorice. All I know is, I like that flavor very much. The "true" black licorice, NO. And worst of all is the hard kind that's sort of brown when you bite into it, rather than black. 🤮

The harder kind with the brownish inner color is the real stuff ...beloved by those who belove licorice (aka liquorice)
