Not sure if there already exist a few similar threads on this board, already.
But since the topic got brought up a few times in the Misleading Movie Posters thread, and where I believe msdemos mentioned Showgirls (1995) and how certain modern b-movies these days, often tries to disguise themselves, or be sold as yet another "cult-bad" movie. Yet, most of those, surely were made from the first go, to look like crap and be campy and cheesy.
Where as what msdemos brought up, was the opposite kind of So bad, it's good. And where once big budget films, like Showgirls, was supposed to be just another box office slice of seedy and sleazy 90s erotica, continuing on the success of Basic Instinct (1992), but where something in the making, just ended up going very wrong, and yeah, the film turned into a ridiculous joke, but still a very enjoyable bad movie. One which today is surely among the most beloved and cherished big movie flops of the 90s, and I guess that is what this thread is all about.
The ones, which at a certain time or point, were gonna be a cinematic piece of "art", and where it by some kind of accident, became anything but what it was going for.
Instead, it turned into a laughing stock, or a gigantic flop, trashed by both the critics and the audience. Of course, some, maybe never even were given a proper theatrical release, but would then much later on (some even decades later) found a whole new audience of bad movie lovers, due to cable TV or the VHS rental format. That or the classic word of mouth ways of promoting, which I guess with the rise of the internet, and maybe even more, Youtube made sure, that a lot of old "classics", all of a sudden got the opportunity to rise once more.
For me, Youtube and certain Youtube Channels, have been a goldmine, when it comes to finding or looking up unseen and unheard of cult and b-movies.
Some were probably not all that completely unknown, but without the heavy trending parodies and short video clips, with some hilarious one-liners or goofy bad acted scenes, often found under titles such as:
"WORST MOVIE SCENE", "WORST MOVIE DEATH" and similar big lettered titled videos.
Well then, without, I am not sure if they would have enjoyed the same kind of reputation, that they have now.
Troll II "OOOOOOH MYYYY GOOOOOOD!" or Silent Night, Deadly Night 2 "GARBAGE DAY!", is probably among those which rise to the occasion, and became the joke of these kind of bad and cheesy films of the 80s and early 90s. Of course, the difference to those, and Showgirls, was that the latter, came with big money, big talents and big expectations. Where as the two goofy horror sequels, most likely were made to try an milk the original films, and seek out its audience on the video rental scene, not becoming a big success at the cinemas.
Anyway, to cut a long "story" short. This thread is all about cheese, sleaze, and maybe getting to discov or re-discover a few personal favorite bad movies, which is a blast to see, and that you feel fits into the unintentionally fun or just so bad it's great entertainment value.
There are of course, some, that surely is way more notorius or infamous that others. Hell, I still have not seen The Room, but part of me "fears" that all the hype surrounding it, might just not be lived up, at least to my own expectations, as it has happened a few times over, where you go in, expecting huge laughs, and it only ends up as, well, a truly terrible and very dull, or boring adventure, and nothing like you had in mind, or hoped it would be.
Again, taste differs from person to person, but yeah, one cannot always guarantee immediate success or "great" entertainment value, but it could still be a nice way of guiding similar minded folks, to pick up a few unseen recommendations, here and there.
I guess, at the end of the day, people might not always tend to see eye to eye, on what is a bad and fun movie, or one that is just a really bad movie. But for me, I could think of a few examples, which surely fits into how one often like to see them as:
Death Wish 3 (1985) by Charles Winner
I often find Commando (1985), getting mentioned as an unintentional bad or cheesy action movie, which I think is not really the right way of putting it. Cheesy, hell yeah, but it seems like once Arnie arrived in the leading role, some huge changes went on, and where it went from a far more dramatic and serious tone (I think Gene Simmons at one point, were in the leading part, but backed out) to a larger than life, over the top macho action film, that never took itself too seriously, and always had a cheesy one-liner ready, to make sure the audience never forgot it either.
Anyway, the film became a cult-classic among Arnie and 80s action fans, and is very fun, campy and hilarious, but I am not sure really fits into the unintentional bad films, as it was most likely made with no intentions of being a "great" film, but a fun, goofy and cheesy explosive adventure, helping Arnold to continue his journey, from a terrifying villainous machine, in The Terminator, to become a more sellable, heroic and Americanized 80s leading man, and I think Commando did a great way of doing exactly that.
Well, Death Wish 3, is one I am pretty sure fits more into the unintentional bad movie territory, at least due to having seen it many, many times over, and heard and read so much fun and exciting stories of what went on, during the making of it.
The first and original 1974 film, is of course a far more serious and gritty chapter. One which showcases a more vulnerable and fragile anti-hero, who loses his family and life at the hands of some local scum. And in turn, becomes over time, a vigilante, who kind of stumbles onto the criminal scene, and is never as ruthless or trigger happy as the one that boosted onto the 80s b-movie Cannon Pictures era.
Part 2, is most likely the darkest and most violent and sleazy one, and somehow has always felt just a bit too hasty and vulgar, but I can see why so many like it, due to the similar brutal vigilante titles of that time, and having Paul Kersey, the original Mr. Vigilante back in full force, deadlier and meaner than ever.
Still, part 3, is where things really got cooking. The whole film feels so much cheaper than the earlier ones, and the overacting, the stereotypes, the hilarious one-liners, there is just so much cheese and sleaze going on, but the fun kind of bad movie entertainment.
From what I understood, Bronson hated how things ended up, as he expected a far more serious (I think) movie, but where Charles Winner, somwhere, turned the film into an almost parodic "comedy", and the two came almost to blows, which resulted in the men ending their friendship.
Anyway, Death Wish 3, is one of those bad, somewhat yet hilariously enjoyable b-movies, that you kind of need to see, to actually believe.
As at times, it looks and sounds, way more like a parody, blending vigilante films with a full blown circus, or something that was meant for a Broadway Show. And I believe a lot of the "actors", who ended up portraying the colorful and anything but "scary" villains and gang members, were dancers in real life.
There are so many hilarious and fun scenes, taking place, but of course the search function will not work along with me today, so I cannot find the threads where a lot of them have been posted or written about. I guess one just have to pick out a few, of far too many, so here it goes:
"It's MY CAR!"
Probably one of the most famous scenes, and where the life lesson should be, that you should never, ever disturb Mr. Kersey during his dinner.
I love how he had earlier in the film, mentioned that his rental car, was actually not for him, but instead more of an easy bait, to lure out the gang members with. And no less than a few seconds later on, the local scumbags, is already swarming around the car, like a pack of flies, above a freshly dropped cowpie.
Anway, he kills two guys, then just returns like nothing happened, to finish off the dinner with his fellow neighbours.
A ridiculously campy bad guy, tries to "borrow" some money from a few of the local citizen, by first yelling and throwing verbal language at them, which of course is never wise, if you want to be helped out by strangers. But yeah, Paul Kersey comes to the rescue, suckerpunches the baddie into oblivion, and the whole scene is just such a funny and goofy moment of 80s b-movie cheese.
Among the most over the top (of many), is towards the ending, where Bronson and Ed Lauter teams up "I owed you that one, DUDE!", to just run through the streets, and gun down bad guys, like there is no tomorrow. Shame Lauter did not come onto the scene, a bit earlier, as it seemed the two had great chemistry.
Well, I will leave it for now. But of course, what is really bad or funny, is very different from person to person, but I know that I loved reading the old IMDb general boards, specially those sitting below the Death Wish 3 page, just seeing many similar minded fans, having a blast ridiculing or bringing up their favorite scenes, characters, one-liners and so, from this absolute hilarious and campy 80s action film.
