This INTK is probably impossible to solve because it has so many details that I don’t know. But it’s been in the back of my head for a long time now and I thought I might as well ask. When I was little—late ’90s, early 2000s—my grandmother was babysitting me one night and I was watching some children’s cartoon. I don’t remember what channel, but from what I’ve looked up I’d guess it was Noggin. Anyway, at whatever watershed time the cartoon went off and a program for teenagers came on. Whatever the teenager show was terrified little Salzmank, and my grandmother came in and saw me watching it and shut off the TV immediately. I’d love to know what show it was. This is such a strong memory, especially for one so early. My biggest memory is of people—I’m guessing teens—sitting around a water fountain. The best point of reference is this scene in Scream: I’ve long considered that the scene I’m remembering actually is this one in Scream. And the movie would certainly scare a little kid. But I highly doubt that the Noggin channel or any channel that played children’s cartoons would have the rights to, let alone play, Scream. My other problem with saying this is the scene is that I remember some kind of fixture, a sprinkler or something, behind the kids. Anyone know a scene that looks similar to this and would appear on that kind of channel late ’90s? I know, so vague, maybe not worth asking. But I’d love to solve this little personal mystery.

Do you remember what happened in the scene that scared you so much?

Do you remember what happened in the scene that scared you so much? That is an excellent question and, alas, one of the details I do not know. Whatever it was must have been scary enough that my grandmother knew the moment she walked in that I shouldn’t be watching it.

Re: that, the scary part had to have happened soon after the fountain part… I wasn’t watching the show/movie for long at all.

I would love to be able to help you. Maybe you can find your answer here, a history of Noggin’s programming:

Ha, I didn’t even consider it might be Friends. But nothing scary about that…my thoughts on the show notwithstanding.

Noggin Programming Thanks, Jervis, I’ll go through the list some more, but offhand I don’t see anything that I think would fit…

I have so many memories like this of something on tv creeping me out as a kid that it makes me wonder why people even let their children watch tv unsupervised. Even commercials in the 90s were disturbing. As for the original question here. I agree with President Ackbar™ . It was most definitely Friends.

It wasn't The Secret World of Alex Mack by any chance? If you're not familiar with it, it was a teen show about a girl who gets superpowers after accidental exposure to a mysterious chemical. Now there were definitely intense scenes in the show that could've easily been terrifying for a little kid; not so much if you were a bit older or relatively desensitised to it. I loved that show, but I don't think they ever played the final season on TV over here in Australia. If they did I never saw it.

This is not going to help you any bu-u-u-u-ut, the one that scared what my Okie mother used to call “the pee wadin’” out of me when I was but a tiny tot was the Martin and Lewis comedy “Scared Stiff” (1953), the ending when they go exploring the haunted castle occupied by a voodoo zombie. I learned much later that SS was a remake of a much superior Bob Hope film, “The Ghost Breakers” (1940). Hope (along with Der Bingle) has a cameo in “Scared Stiff.”

Do you remember .... were there lagomorphs involved ?
or ... perhaps, even more frightening ... squid in the fountain ?

I remember the TV show “Ghostwriter” having some scary ish scenes.. at least for a kid’s show. As well as “Wishbone”. But have you excluded it possibly being “Are You Afraid of the Dark?”

Are You Afraid of the Dark? was my best guess as well… I’ve seen a bunch of episodes of the show, though, and haven’t found anything with kids sitting in front of a water fountain like in that Scream scene. But I’m going to keep looking.
