If a musical instrument toy counts too: Tin drum - The Tin Drum (1979) Thanks , Why not... gives me a chance to mention a favourite film of mine an adaptation of Harold Pinter's The Birthday Party (1968) which features a significant scene with a toy drum given to Stanley for his birthday, although he insists it is not his birthday. In Stalag 17, Joey (Robinson Stone plays an OCARINA aka a "sweet potato" The ocarina is an ancient wind musical instrument—a type of vessel flute. Variations exist, but a typical ocarina is an enclosed space with four to twelve finger holes and a mouthpiece that projects from the body. It is traditionally made from clay or ceramic, but other materials are also used—such as plastic, wood, glass, metal, or bone. An example of an ocarina made of an animal horn is the medieval German gemshorn. (via Wiki) Trivia about Mr. Stone : Under the name Robert Stone, he taught classes at Fordham University's College at Lincoln Center in New York City during the 1970s and 1980s. One of his students was Denzel Washington. His only feature was Stalag 17 but he worked on TV 1954-1967. I wonder if his students ever knew who he was ! MORE: "Sweet Potato Piper", Road to Singapore, 1940 - also on the ocarina Turns out there is an Ocarina website: theocarinanetwork.com/topic/7258739/1/

Jimmy Stewart on the accordion in NIGHT PASSAGE -- his attraction to this film in order to play his favorite instrument helped to break up his successful professional association with director Anthony Mann, who hated the script. Van Johnson plays the concertina to accompany singing soldiers in THE HUMAN COMEDY. looks like he is enjoying himself here in between takes thanks for the info , I remember being relieved when he finally put that cumbersome accordion down

The Flute is very noticeable as played in 8 1/2 (1963)and is important to the plot of several versions of The Pied Piper of Hamelin.

And what about the piano in Autumn Sonata? Frankly, I can't remember if Bergman plays it or not. And Kirk Douglas plays a mean trumpet in Young Man With a Horn, a fictional account of Bix Beiderbecke. Just a few things I came to think of after these two movies was mentioned: Young Man with a Horn 1950, the soundtrack recorded trumpet that Kirk follows was made by Harry James. A funny thing is that the real Bix played cornet, not trumpet For Autumn Sonata 1978, Ingrid Bergman was teached how to look like she played piano by concert pianist Käbi Lareti (a former wife of Ingmar Bergman), and speaking of Ingrid, she asks for a specific song to a pianist in Casablanca, played piano in both versions of Intermezzo, she also played piano in her debut Munkbrogreven (The Count of the Old Town) if my memory is correct.

Bagpipes add a highly emotive tone to many a classic film. Parades, at funerals, in battle, the pipers play sad, sorrowful sounding music for mourning and for rousing effect. Glad and happy tunes will call your feet to the dance. The Bridge on the River Kwai and Gunga Din, Tunes of Glory, come to mind. Another favorite example of film Bagpipes features in the Scottish barn dance scene in I Know Where I'm Going (1945) and that beautiful scene of the three pipers following behind Joan, which never fails to draw a tear of heartfelt emotion. Tunes Of Glory (1960)

Not sure if that post is supposed to be a summation and valediction. If so, apologies for prolonging the pleasure, but we cannot omit the most remarkable musical instrument of all. Every home should have one! The Excessive Machine, a genuine sex organ on which an expert artist of the keyboard, in this case, Durand Durand himself (played by Milo O'Shea), can drive a victim (Jane Fonda) to death by pleasure.

manfromplanetx In looking up Calliope did you note that Played at a Circus it's a CAL-EE-OPE (long e) Played anywhere else, like on a Showboat it's a CA-LYE-O-PEA Pretty cool, eh? The Circus Parade was always ended by the Steam cal-e-ope and folks would follow it to the circus grounds.

I found a new one for the collection: The HURDY GURDYSpencer Tracy plays one in Captains Courageous (1937)There's a photo of him and also of the instrument but they won't link for me. A search will bring them up tho' The hurdy-gurdy is a stringed instrument that produces sound by a hand crank-turned, rosined wheel rubbing against the strings. The wheel functions much like a violin bow, and single notes played on the instrument sound similar to those of a violin. Melodies are played on a keyboard that presses tangents—small wedges, typically made of wood—against one or more of the strings to change their pitch. Like most other acoustic stringed instruments, it has a sound board and hollow cavity to make the vibration of the strings audible.

Street Organs and Organ Grinders in The List of Adrian Messenger Poor Little Rich Girl The Organ Grinder 1933 · 7min · Animated An organ grinder and his monkey make their way down a New York streetscape. The monkey climbs up several stories to get tips from a couple of women. It does a little dance for a group of kids, then uses some props to impersonate Harpo Marx, Stan Laurel, and Oliver Hardy. It then sits down at a couple of pianos and begins playing, first, the title song, then 42nd Street. It gets caught in a runaway car, and after running into a fruit cart, crashes into a music store and comes out as a one-man band with the organ grinder in the rear. www.imdb.com/title/tt0024420/plotsummary
