The hype machines are cranking up (Did you know the Dragons are going to win the comp this year according to new recruit George Burgess?) But we're still two weeks away from the NRL start, with AFL returning a week later.
No real marquee match ups in round one, with the Thursday night opener, Penrith vs Manly, the closest but you never really know what might happen in round one. The Queen of Empathy still has NZ locked up so the Warriors will be playing us at "home" on the Sunshine Coast.
AFL are breaking with tradition: Carlton vs Richmond will happen on the first Thursday of the season but will not be the season opener with the Grand Final rematch to happen on Wednesday night as Melbourne host the Bulldogs.
My predictions are pretty sterile. NRL: Penrith, Melbourne, Souths and the Roosters will all be good. Parra should be good. Hopefully other contenders will emerge to keep it interesting.
In the AFL: Melbourne, the Dogs, and Brisbane are the 3 main contenders. Got a bad feeling about Port. Really loaded up last year and laid an egg in the prelim. Lot of people writing off the Tigers. They had a lot of injuries last year and still have an elite list on paper. Dismiss them at your peril. Difficult to say with the rest. Essendon and Freo should play finals. Cats are going again having kept their list intact but I can't see it.

Penrith taking up where they left off last year: failing to put game dominance on the scoreboard. Though they have scored now. 6-0 with two disallowed (obstructions both).

Manly score a sensational try right on half time. Hadn't even looked like scoring prior to that. Panthers lead 12-6 at the break.
Bed time. I'll read about it in the paper tomorrow.

Sheesh. Penrith won 28-6. Put it on the scoreboard in the second half.

And Australian SBK had its first broadcast on SBS. Guaranteed money should help a semi professional sport like this one so good luck to them.
In the Supercars, two excellent races in Sydney. Reigning champion Shane Van Gusburgen won a clean race one on a 3-stop strategy. Race two was wet and had plenty of safety cars with reigning Bathurst winner Chaz Mostert winning after controlling most of the race.
Chaz is the point's leader after one round (3rd in race one) ahead of Anton De Pasquale (2nd and 3rd) and Gizzy (5th in race two). Brodie Kostecki had the remaining podium.

Penrith look like the well oiled machine they were last year. Manly were lucky to get to 6, and only concede 28. Could’ve been 42-0 easily….

Canberra very lucky to get away with a dreadful second half. Led 18-6 at half time, made errors galore in the second stanza as the Sharks went ahead 19-18 with about 9 minutes to go. But the Raiders replied out of nowhere to regain the lead and then just stopped a Cronulla try in the last 10s.
Great finish but Canberra made it a lot harder than it needed to be.

Well, in the words of Deadpool, Souths played like a sack of dildos tonight. Thank God that wasn't the opener. Brisbane wins 11-4 in a dour slog.

Pretty happy with that win. a) we're in no position to question the quality of wins relative to opposition and b) pretty good response once we fell behind. Really smashed the Warriors in the last 15-20 minutes.

Tigers doing Tigers things. Played well for 50 minutes, but couldn’t get far enough in front of Melbourne to convert the start into a win. Led 14-4, but lost 22-2 in the last 30minutes when Melbourne only had 2 reserves left.

Watched the Roosters game: they just weren't switched on. They often start seasons like that. Wouldn't read much into it. Knights fans are, quite understandably, cockahoop though.
Eels beat the Titans in an entertaining game which GC kind of butchered. Mind you, Parra did plenty of butchering of their own in the first half.
Bulldogs beat the Cowboys 6-4. A win's a win, but the Dogs poor attack appears to still be an issue. Cowboys just looked poor.

AFL back and...Nice one guys, you played last year's tape. Melbourne start like a house on fire before getting reeled in by the Bulldogs. Doggies looked to be pulling away, but then Melbourne score a flurry of goals to take over. A few more thrills in the last quarter, but very similar otherwise. Dees by 26.

Speaking of last year's tape...Richmond. built up a seemingly insurmountable lead and then looked on helpless as Carlton hammered through 6 goals in about 10 minutes to settle the contest before the Tigers could react. Carbon copy of most of their losses second half of last year.
In the NRL, really good game, with the Storm showing poise under pressure to withstand a Souths comeback from 14-0 down to win 15-14. First real belter of the new season.

Can't say the Dragons played well. Was ridiculous the number of errors really, but the defence stood up in a 20-16 loss to Penrith. If we'd held onto some ball and hadn't given away professional fouls either side of halftime (the first of which cost us 14 points) could have been a very different game. There is plenty to like in our play so far this year though. Lomax needs to learn that sometimes taking a tackle is the best option.
Pies have started well against St Kilda and lead by 14 at half time. Roosters are mauling Manly 22-0 in the League. Bed time.

Pies won. Swans won a really entertaining Sydney Derby at Homebush. Two thrillers in the NRL with the Titans just scraping past the Warriors 20-18, while Cronulla defeated Parra after the bell 18-16. Canberra were shite in getting thrashed by North Queensland.
It did my soul good to watch Essendon lose by 66 to Geelong. Thanks for that Bombers. Brisbane over ran Port in a thriller at the Gabba.

AFL tribunal is still an utter joke. If you jump in the air and make contact with a guy above his shoulder with your hip but, by the grace of God, miss his head and don't concuss or injure him, you get off.
However if you see contact coming, deliberately stop your forward momentum and the other player basically runs into you, injuring their collar bone you get a week.
The first guy couldn't give a shit what damages he causes the other player. The second guy lessened the impact and therefore the injury by easing off.
Fucking ridiculous.

That was a bit rubbish from the Dragons. Impressive start to the year for Cronulla though.
Carlton won a weird one over the Bulldogs after Western managed to dominate the final 10 minutes but not score a single goal (0.7). Blues by 12 points.

Has the sleeping giant finally awoken in the AFL ?
Cronulla were really good in beating Saints. They look like a Top 8 team for mine. The only problem they may have is that Matt Moylan is very injury prone.
I’m on my way to Campbelltown as I type to hopefully watch the Tigers open their account against the Warriors

Shockingly, the Tigers threw away another win. Even more shocking - the referees made an absolute stinker by missing a try, and not going to the video ref. Souths beat the Chooks again. And the Swans beat the Cats, with Buddy kicking his 1000th goal - only the 5th bloke to do it (and more than likely the last)
