6th actually. Gordon Coventry, Doug Wade, Tony Lockett, Jason Dunstall, and Garry Ablett Sr are the other 5.

It’s funny - as a very casual AFL fan I’ve heard of 5 of the 6, but absolutely nothing about Doug Wade.
I’ve seen maybe 6 AFL games live in my life, and I’ve seen 2 of them kick 10 goals in a game. Dunstall against Sydney in the mid 90’s, and Lockett against Richmond in the same period….

Coventry was a Bradmanesque depression era hero who finished with a bizarre total of 1299 akin to the Don's 99.94. Wade was a bloody good full forward with a long career spanning the 60s and 70s who went from a very mediocre Geelong to Barassi's Kangaroos to win a premiership late in his career. Understandable he'd be off the radar of non-victorians. I've always heard people argue that Matt Richardson would have kicked 1000 if he'd kicked straighter, but he was only 2% less accurate than Wade (60% to 58%). I've seen some magical finishes in AFL, but never seen a 10 goal haul live.

I've seen some magical finishes in AFL, but never seen a 10 goal haul live. So I did some research - and it wasn’t against Richmond that I saw Lockett kick 10. It was Port Adelaide in 1998. The reason I know now is that in that Richmond game Lockett also kicked his 100th for the year. And I don’t remember ever jumping the fence at the SCG. The dunstall game was in 1994 - it was the first game of AFL I ever went to….

Titans could, and probably should, be 3-0. Instead they're 1-2 after giving up a 22-0 lead to the Raiders. Eels beat Melbourne with a golden try in an absolute better.
Knights kept up with Penrith for about an hour, but couldn't stop the juggernaut forever, losing 38-20.
Port are not responding well to their feeble exit last year. Thrashed at home by Hawthorn. I did call this, but it's still disappointing. Pies belted Adelaide. Melbourne narrowly held off a fast finishing GC (speaking of sleeping giants potentially waking) Brisbane came from a fair way back early to beat Essendon.
Big game in the AFL with Richmond hosting GWS. Loser will be 0-2. Other two games look like maulings with a covid ravaged West Coast playing North at Docklands and St Kilda getting the Sunday Afternoon in Perth slot against a very good IMO Freo team. Queensland Derby in the NRL, followed by Manly trying to get something happening against the Bulldogs. Long way back from 0-3.

Cowboys manhandle the Broncos 38-12 in a statement game. Valentine Holmes completely out pointed his opposite Kotoni Staggs while Nth Qld’s seemingly never ending supply of back rowers continues with Griffin Neame and Jeremiah Nanai outstanding alongside usual suspects Taumalolo, Luki and Gilbert.

Manly wins 13-12 in an ordinary game against a toothless Bulldogs who were lucky to score 12.
What this means though is that after 3 rounds, there is only one side 3-0. The champion Panthers. There is also only one side 0-3. The other pussy cats - The Tigers. Oof.
North, Richmond and Saints win in the AFL, all of which went to script and according to the bookies.

Badly needed win for Manly. Doesn't matter how you get your first, as long as you get it no later than now.
Well, in the AFL 6 teams on 2-0, the current top 2 won't play finals. 6 teams 0-2. Only one of those who are certain (as you can be at 0-2) to play finals is the Bulldogs. Other three who might are Port, GWS and Essendon, of course those 3 are currently the bottom 4. So a bit of a strange start to the year.

Two bloody awful games tonight that kept me up because they were close. Bulldogs just outlasted Sydney with a last minute goal giving them an 11 point win.
And then in the NRL the Titans were extremely lucky to win with a last gasp try after a pretty poor kick on the last tackle hit the upright. Still should have been defused, but the defender lost the ball before he could ground it.

4 games tonight, and the 3 early games all over shadowed by the late one. Crows win the Showdown after the siren. 96-92. Souths and Penrith threatened to get close a couple of times, but Panthers were too good. Would have been more convincing if Cleary hadn't had a shocker in front of goal.

Apart from Collingwood's weird loss to Geelong, pretty blah games again on Saturday. Pies blew a 31 point lead, but could have been 50 ahead with straight kicking. Anyway, rebuilding year so you'll get wild fluctuations like this.
For the rest Roosters thrashed a disappointing North Queensland, Manly had a comfortable win over a disappointing Canberra and the Warriors beat Brisbane in one of the worst second halves you could ever wish to see.
In the AFL, GWS won by 26 easing up against GC17 and Brisbane demolished North by 108.
So yeah, a lot of shit and one weird close one.
A few days on and I really think the talk of Thursday night's game being the worst ever is over blown. For your consideration: St George vs Parra Round 13, 2006. Dragons return to Kogarah and boy were both teams determined to show the fans what they'd been missing. 0-0 after 69 minutes. Josh Morris kicked a FG in the 70th minute to give Parra the lead. Hornby answered straight back. 1-1 after 78 minutes. Hornby slots another to give the Dragons the lead. Then Cooper scores a try after the bell to make it 8-1. Now that game...sucked.

Dragons hang with Parra for a half before getting blown away. Absolutely wretched round of games with 7 ,blow-outs and the 1 close game was a shocker.
St Kilda had a good win over Richmond while Freo made it 2 Derby wins in a row after dropping 11 straight and Carlton outlasted Hawthorm by a point.
Typical Telly this morning. Roosters women front page and back. No mention of who they're playing. Like 2010 all over again...

Two absolutely shithouse one sided with poor skills games tonight.
Newcastle just could not hold onto the ball while Port have no forwards.

Friday made up for Thursday, 3 thrillers with plenty of tries in the NRL and goals in the AFL. Can't be happy with the Roosters winning and Geelong have the same fuck-off-for-a-couple-of-years heat with me the Packers do so that result pissed me off too.
Saturday saw both my teams lose in frustrating fashion due to not performing in attack. Richmond thrashing the Bulldogs was pretty funny. Eels and Titans had another entertaining match. Was too busy watching F1 qualifying to pay any attention to the afternoon games. Did catch the end of Swans-Kangas. Amazing goal by Heeney to seal it.

Bloody hell, the Dragons are useless in both genders. People will blow up over the last Roosters try (which was farcical) but the Dragons were never going to score once they'd fallen behind. Absolute amateur hour on attack.

Absolute amateur hour on attack. I take it you didn’t see the Tigers v Sharks game. Amateur hour in all departments by the Tigers, who should’ve been completely embarrassed by their performance but seemed happy enough to laugh and joke with the opposition after the full time siren….

Latrell out for 2 months. Big loss for Souths who aren't setting the world on fire to start with. Dragons hinting at sacking Griffin. Yep, that'll stop players from knocking on under no pressure and going for no-look passes when they have the opposition defence cooked: changing the coach.
Gillon McLachlan is being released from AFL CEO prison at the end of the year after serving, by then, a 9 year sentence. Mixed run for mine. Completely ballsed up the AFLW (which I would only watch if paid to do so anyway) by expanding far too quickly and not making draws or scheduling until the last minute every year. He's worn the Adam Goodes stuff though personally I don't see what he could have done about it. A couple of good tv deals, reacted well to covid in 2020.
And CA made it official with Andrew MacDonald. He's the "new" national men's coach.

And Penrith are going to win 7 straight premierships after signing on the Clearys to the end of time...by which I mean 2027.
