Since it was mentioned in the article since they were tested, I wonder what memories or thoughts rats have before they die.
Also, based on both experiences with dying relatives and accounts I have read, I think many people may not recall their lives but instead experience -- or "dream" -- transitioning to the next state of consciousness according to lifelong beliefs they have held.

Or the worst. Or neither.

Or the worst. Or neither. Aren't we operating under the assumption that brain activity is thought?

Aren't we operating under the assumption that brain activity is thought? But then again, it is an assumption. But seriously, I think the fact that it may be neither a replay of the best nor worst moments of a life does not preclude any other possibility of thought. For example, something completely fantastical or imaginary based on beliefs or desires. Or maybe not even that. When we sleep and don't dream at all, is the brain still active? Are we still thinking?

Something in the middle, then? Fair enough. We may not always remember our dreams, but I believe we always have them. After all, if you can't turn off your thoughts while awake, odds are slim that it can be done while asleep.
