Casey Affleck's is, for me, the best performance I have seen in an American movie from the past several years. He is incredible.
I've also seen Mortensen, Grant and Garfield (Silence) but don't consider them worthy of a vote although the first two certainly had their moments.
1. Casey Affleck, Manchester by the Sea
2. Hiroshi Abe, After the Storm
3. Dave Johns, I, Daniel Blake
4. Shahab Hosseini, The Salesman
5. Ryan Gosling, La La Land

Gosling is one of my least favorite lead actor nominations of all time and was far better in The Nice Guys imo. I would have been fine with him getting a nomination for that performance.

Gosling is certainly filler and I wouldn't expect him to hang around my top five once I catch up on some more of last year's titles (haven't seen The Nice Guys, among so many!), but I did think he was the best thing about the film. There was a light touch to his performance that really lifted the movie, for me.

Stone and the cinematography were easily the best things about that movie for me. Stone is playing herself a bit too but she has some great acted scenes imo. Gosling didn't have even one scene that stuck out to me.
