So good to see you here, matt. And glad to find another THE CARDINAL fan, especially one with a personal connection. And yes, Tyron certainly did go on to success as a novelist. I loved the film version of THE OTHER, possibly one of the scariest films I ever saw. Historical factoid, Spider -- CARDINAL was the last motion picture that President Kennedy watched, just before flying to Dallas. Boston's Archbishop Cushing arranged for a special screening at the White House just before the film was to have its premiere.

I would say my two favorites are Black Narcissus, and The Nun's Story. Another one I like: I Confess (1953), with Montgomery Clift and Karl Malden.
Two more that haven't been mentioned: Rain (1932), and Wise Blood (1979). You may notice a "Huston" connection between the two.....

Lots of good movies here. I'll add a couple of French Catholic films I haven't seen listed yet, Bresson's Diary of a Country Priest (1951), and Monsieur Vincent (1947), a biopic of St. Vincent de Paul. While we're on the topic of religious biopics, throw in Rossellini's The Flowers of St. Francis (1950). And Dreyer's Day of Wrath (1943) deserves a mention, though it's a distant third in terms of Dreyer's films with religious themes (behind Ordet and The Passion of Joan of Arc).

Ordet 1955 a danish film by Carl Theodor Dreyer I am an intolerant atheist. Many of the movies mentioned here I have found, or would find, insulting to the intelligence or even more offensive than that. But the ending of "Ordet" (1955) had me in tears. It is absurd, yet totally moving. Great film-making and in my all-time world Top 20. I agree with mikef6 that most Bergman films have an underlying spiritual theme, and most of them are excellent.

My favorite spiritually themed film is It's A Wonderful Life. I watch it each year at Christmastime. My favorite religiously themed film is the original 1976 The Omen.

"What Dreams May Come" is a very good choice. I could mot believe that Robin Williams could have committed suicide after being in that film.

Matka Joanna od Aniołów, Mother Joan of the Angels (1961) Polish film from Jerzy Kawalerowicz, loosely based on the real life outbreak of mass hysteria in the French town of Loudun in 1634. A sincere and deeply spiritual priest been sent to investigate a case of demonic possession at the local convent after previous failed attempts had tried to exorcise Mother Joan, said to be the most possessed of all the nuns. Sacrifice and salvation in the name of love... Stunning cinematography, Absolutely Outstanding film!
Sous le soleil de Satan, Under the Sun of Satan (1987) French from Maurice Pialat
Gérard Depardieu gives a remarkably compelling performance as a devout priest who tempted by the devil becomes involved with a murderess. An excellent film from the French master about mysticism and God's grace. Winner of the Palme d'Or at the 1987 Cannes Film Festival the film was adapted from the 1926 novel from Georges Bernanos. It was the third time a spiritually themed novel by Bernanos was adapted for film. Two brilliant previous adaptations, Diary of a Country Priest (1951) and Mouchette (1967) are both directed by Robert Bresson.
O Pagador de Promessas, Keeper of Promises (1962) Brazillian, directed by Anselmo Duarte
Sadly neglected film currently has no mainstream release, unjust considering the film won the Palme d'Or at the 1962 Cannes Film Festival, the first (and to date the only) Brazilian film to achieve that honour. A landowner makes a vow after he perceives a miracle with the recovery of his dying donkey. He sets off on a quest hauling and dragging a huge wooden cross miles, which he will present to the local priest and church. The enlightening journey and negative response at his destination tests his faith and spirituality. The film has a message of corruption within systems of power, it is a film that speaks for the people (Cinema Novo) to overcome the corrupted forces that seek to control how we live and how we practice our faith.

Mother Joan of the Angels is a similar theme, both films are based on extraordinary true accounts of the superstition and religious fanaticism that gripped humanity in those Dark Ages... Mother Joan picks up the story some 4 years after the closure depicted in The Devils the trial and death of Father Grandier. Mother Joan was adapted from a short story written in 1946 by Polish author Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz which was contained in the volume Nowa miłość i inne opowiadania (New Love and Other Stories). Iwaszkiewicz developed and modernized the short story genre and gave a new dynamic angle to the historical novel, enlivening the epic narrative by enriching it with elements of reflection and lyricism which Kawalerowicz enhances with his own creative expertise.. Ken Russell's screenplay and film is based partly on the 1952 book The Devils of Loudun by Aldous Huxley
