Those movies were funny. They were done as gags, nothing to be taken seriously. Everyone is so sensitive these days, you could make a big deal about Princess Leia getting blasted with a stun gun in a New Hope. Lots of killing in movies too. Rape tends to be a much more touchy (no pun intended) subject for people than murder.

Like it was this baseball movie, for example and every time the team won the manger would pull off a an article of clothing, that was one a life size cutout of the female owner. And these were the people we were to root for.

That guy who helps set up Dan Ackroyd into his downward spiral, perhaps got raped by a Gorilla who mistook him for a potential mate. No ones ever been like,'oh my god, that poor man got raped by a guy in a monkey suit'. It's's not real life, the bad guy gets his comeuppance. It's's pretty comical and absurd. It's been the same movie for the past 40 years, the only thing that's changed are people's attitudes. It's a comedy, it's not a clockwork orange where it is portrayed in a disturbing way. It's all about context.

In the "comedy" western "Waterhole #3" (1967) James Coburn rapes a woman in a barn. When the woman's father catches up with him, Coburn defends the act by calling it "attack with a friendly weapon."

Any crime a victim survives is going to be a sensitive topic for them.

Straw Dogs (1971) is famously known for its rape content.

Things get mildly rapey in River of No Return between Robert Mitchum and Marilyn Monroe. But then they're interrupted by some unsavory looking prospectors and then Mitchum remembers his good manners.

Rocky as well. What her face is trying to leave, and Rocky a known criminal blocks her from leaving.

There’s even monster rape in couple of movies I remember from the early 80s. Humanoids From The Deep 1980 and The Beast Within 1982. Don’t forget tree rape in The Evil Dead. Adore the movie but that was the one scene that made me uncomfortable.

No political correctness back then, gender norms were different and sexual assault was treated as seriously. It was something that could be joked about in a way that wouldn't be acceptable today. Plus people's understanding of what constituted rape and consent - or the absence thereof - was different. Our culture has evolved and will continue to. Every time I watch an old movie I know I'm watching a slice of history, the cultural output of a bygone era. Some of the jokes don't work today but it is what it is.

And heck..you could argue it goes at least as far back as Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. The girls were abducted and snowed in but that was all that happened .... no rape or sexual activity of any sort. Several silent films deal with unwanted sex and pregnancy as early as the 19teens ! Johnny Belinda was raped (1948) Marital rape in Gone With the Wind - 1939

thread found while lookin' for hiraganakanji I agree but if you listen to the words of the song Adam sang motivating his brothers to be like the Romans to find their brides.. he referred to the story of the rape of the Sabine women. Very small part of an enjoyable film. And yes.. they actually showed the brothers were good men.. just saying. 😀
