I'm not an expert on this subject, but let me say my impressions on some old school racing games. That I believe are among the best.
First, top gear for the snes. This game, while it is great has one thing holding it back. Which is if you go into a turn , your car will automatically turn no matter what. I suppose this is to make up for how fast this game is.
No matter what, your car shouldn't turn unless you make it so. It's a problem in an otherwise great game.
The other game that I would put among the great racing games that I know is outrun. (the version I'm talking about is the only game i played in the versions of it, the dreamcast version of the arcade) But with this game they make the corners so fast at times that's it's impossible to get good enough at the game to avoid crashing.
Because if you haven't noticed at any time during this game with where you have to turn sharply around a corner , there is always other cars around you. The important thing to remember is, it isn't just sometimes, but it is everytime, which leads into my next sentence:
The problem is , of course it's a game that was designed to eat quarters.
But, based on the problems with those games. With both of them, they make the cornering either too easy or impossibly hard. So the game rad racer, is the better game out of those two games, since it has none of those problems.

I think I figured out the strategy for beating the arcade version of outrun, just sayin.
The thing to do is write down what turns there are going to be, because then you will anticipate when there will be a sharp left turn for example followed by a sharp right turn. Because you can pause the game at any time to check this see, you gotta do what you gotta do.
If you've played an exact arcade port of outrun you'd know that what I'm saying is totally what is necessary . Because going in to turns followed by an opposite turn , that's the only time when you downshift the car.

How old are we talking? I liked Crash Team Racing (1999), Lego Racers (2001), and Road Rash 64 (1999).

Mario Kart 8 is almost ten years old at this point and it's still fantastic.

I think I found another strategy for the game. When going into a sharp corner, if there are other cars around you, on either side of you I mean. (if they seem like they're in a spot that could cause you problems when turning)
Slow down until they are in front of you. I haven't tried this yet. Don't know for sure if it's useful. I don't actually know if slowing down that often will make you lose. Possibly so.
