We already had Christopher McQuarrie say he'd never direct a Star Wars movie after seeing the how the "fans" acted after The Last Jedi was released. Now David F. Sandburg, the director of Shazam, said the reason why he'd never make a Superman film is because of the way hardcore fans would be sure to behave if their own personal interpretation of Superman wasn't the one they got, and he referenced the Last Jedi.

Jon Favreau doesn’t seem to be getting any hate.
Rian Johnson wanted to anger fans with The Last Jedi. Screw him.

You can usually find it anywhere you see grown adults complaining about the color of speeder bikes because apparently there's no such thing as colorful bikes in a galaxy far far away.

While we’re at it why don’t we just add the Teletubbies to Star Wars. They actually look more at home on those bikes than SW characters!

Sandburg, the director of Shazam, said the reason why he'd never make a Superman film is because of the way hardcore fans would be sure to behave if their own personal interpretation of Superman wasn't the one they got, and he referenced the Last Jedi. What I would say to them is, if you’re not willing to balance your own creativity and vision with the rule books of the franchise and the foundation it already laid - don’t do a franchise film. It’s not for you, and you’re not for it. TLJ? Yeah it was very polarizing with the fans. Most critics loved it though. But half those critics probably never seen a SW movie older than TFA. 90% probably couldn’t tell you anything about SW beyond the names of the main characters in the franchise. They couldn’t tell you the difference between the Force and Disney magic. So when Rian Johnson swaps out the former for the latter and they’re impressed by the surface appearance of it they say crazy things like “He knows SW better than George Lucas”! But the integrity of stuff like that can matter to fans that have been invested in the franchise. In fact if you’re a movie studio you should want it to. Because investment into the world of that franchise is what creates fans and makes them want to return for sequels. Stop being surprised if some fans take issue with it.[/i] So again, any filmmaker who is not willing to realize that this part of the way a fan base works - and they’re not willing to balance their originality with it - don’t do franchise films. Both you and the franchise will be better off.

That's not surprising.
Star Wars have some of the most toxic fans that exist.

It does suck though that good directors are being discouraged from making certain movies because they're worried about fan backlash whether warranted or not.

Well here's a thought, stop making movies that suck in a franchise that started off as gold.
Here, here's a prime example, you want to make a good Star Wars movie, DON'T DO THIS!

Now what SHOULD have been done a long time ago was make the Han Solo Adventure books into a movie, these would work even if you are not a Star Wars fan, in these books there's no Jedi, no Siths, no Force, just a Corellian smuggler and his wookiee copilot dealing with all sorts of fantastic, action-packed and hilarious adventures. And anybody who's read them, who DOESN'T want to see Bollux and Blue Max on the screen? Everybody will disagree, but those two would be more entertaining to watch than R2 and 3PO.

I think this a win win for everyone.
If it scares off directors who simply can't be arsed sitting down and watching a few movies before cracking on with their "craft" (e.g. no more force ghost lightening Yoda, hyperspace suicide, etc) then that's a great thing surely.
If they can't be bothered investing any time but don't want any criticism so won't get involved, also great for them.

Maybe if the directors don't set out to make alienating products and act like they are bigger than Star Wars they won't need to be afraid of fan backlash. It's simple logic - make divisive choices, you get divisive reactions.
