Could someone please translate this mystery message into a movie title, please, and thanks in advance ! I'm sure he's referring to The Curse of the Cat People. so ..."ghost" rather than "imaginary friend" .. k, thanks ! well, then ... The Ghost and Mrs. Muir might work ? !

Someone could probably make the case that it's left as an open question: was Irena really a ghost or only lonely Amy's imagination? As with Matt's submission of Topper and sequels, ghosts can get into dodgy territory, can't they?

Things like that make movies the best magic of all: they not only make you see and hear exactly what they want, they make you think and wonder about what they make you see and hear.

About ghosts and all that, there are, AFAIK, several formats for the imaginary friend film:
1. A person has an imaginary friend and shares this belief with others who have to process the strange sight of a someone talking to nobody- this is a public fantasy pal (Harvey, Lars and the Real Girl). This to me is the most interesting format as it creates all types of group dynamics
2. A person has an imaginary friend but doesn't share this w/ others or doesn't interact w/ such friend in front of others, this is a private fantasy pal (several Horror films- maybe Mr. Brooks). This doesn't share as many dynamics as the first but still develops a unique storyline.
3. A person has an imaginary friend but the movie viewer is unaware that this friend is imaginary until the end- this is an unrevealed fantasy pal (Fight Club, The Uninvited)
To me, # 1 is the most interesting as it creates the most unique plots- this is the main type of movie I am looking for
Ghosts get into territory of the supernatural and, as London noted, that opens a giant can of worms.

One of the most memorable scenes in Classic Film history involves an imaginary friend... The Gold Rush (1925) The "prospector" imagines entertaining the invited friends that did not turn up to his New Years Eve dinner. He envisions them all seated at the table opening presents with him, drinking champagne, and famously he picks up two rolls and spears them on forks using them to perform a clever dance on the table...

Yes, yes, doghouse! I've been making this argument about film in general for decades, and especially now when everything is shown explicitly. I believe it's important not to show everything; rather, to make the viewers co-creators by allowing them to imagine what will be more powerful to them than something they are shown and then have to analyze, which in an odd way takes them out of the viewing experience.
Some things do have to be shown, yes. But what doesn't have to be shown, shouldn't be, in my opinion. There's a certain similarity to this concept and Hitchcock's theory of suspense. He used this example: having two guys at a table with a bomb underneath it, but they didn't know it. The audience, meanwhile, goes crazy, imagining all that will happen and desperately wanting to warn the men that they are in danger. As the viewers collaborate in their minds, their anxiety rises.
I believe there's a correlation between his thesis and mine, though I'm probably not explaining mine very well. Short-hand synopsis: make it possible for the audience to become co-creators in the process.
