I donate them to local libraries. I've no idea if they put them into circulation or not, yet their dropboxes are open 24/7.

So true!
I donate them to charity. Where I live we also have one of those small free libraries in an old red telephone booth. I must've given away hundreds of books in the past years.
And as much as it pains me to do this: sometimes when a book is in a very bad condition (I'm talking of cheap old paperbacks here, not antique books!), already falling apart and missing some of its pages, I'm forced to make the tough decision to have it "euthanised", meaning I throw it away into the paper recycling bin.

Spat shops. (may not be politically correct terminology)

Thrift shop, which coincidentally is where I get most of mine.

When I thin the collection, books and magazines go to the local library for their booksales and to several thrift stores depending on condition, re-sellability and what the store was interested in having.
Local library gets so many donated books that are locally unsellable that they package them up and ship them to a re-seller who pay them by the pound. They even pay for the ones that will be shredded to make new paper.
The library only sells newer books and copies of "the classics". They used to have a hallway filled with FREE books but those get shipped away now.

Catman for some odd reason had kept all his textbooks from college and had also over the years collected a large number of first-year college rhetorics. None of them were of use to anyone, so Catman donated them to the local resource recovery plant which burned them to make electricity.

We have a number of little "free" libraries on people's lawns. They go there. YA books go to my school and end up in a classroom somewhere. Anything else goes on the free book truck outside my school library (nothing inappropriate or too old, of course. Textbooks go to the recycle.)

That's never actually happened. The not wanting a book anymore. If space on the shelves gets tight I add more shelves in the library. Currently I have 4' 6'tall units and 5 3' tall units. Some where close to 600-700 books.
Now I have had duplicates before (still have a couple basically some rarer first editions or autographed ones and a reading copy) Others come from multiple places mostly gifts. I either take them to 2nd and Charles Used Book Shop Chain or to one of the book shops I go to on runs. 2nd and Charles tends to give you better credit than the local book shops but sometimes you got to support the smaller shops inventory for the next guy.

I've actually been thinking about that recently. I'm considering asking someone at our library if they'd accept quite a few books.

If they don't want them, check your local thrift stores.

I dropped off a few at the Salvation Army not long ago. Given a few away to people I know.
