A+
Spielberg's hallmark achievement. Pinocchio was Disney's secret sauce, this was Spielberg's. Watching again, I cannot believe how perfect every single shot looks. Time of day, lighting, effects, blocking, flow, tone, etc... I can't imagine how challenging that might've been in reality. There's not a single production misstep for me. John Williams right there with him, flawlessly.
I also appreciate how dark Spielberg can go, like full stop opening this movie... & yet ramp up the safe family appeal of things almost immediately thereafter, without sacrificing either. Elliott is at once courageous & investigative... when a kid like that is probably more apt to cower or run for help. Spielberg has him instead right into things, letting the children viewers know it's okay, & probably will be the whole way. It's great that other than the mother, & the keys guy later on, not an adult anywhere is personalized - just like Charlie Brown & Peanuts. As for that keys guy, I like to think he had his own encounter as a kid himself... I don't think it's implied here, yet it can be if we want?
As a kid myself, I surely never fully caught the telekinesis angle, what with all the fun & visuals going on. It pays off well enough during the quarantine stuff.
The best thing to never happen for E.T. was a sequel.

The best thing to never happen for E.T. was a sequel. No love for Pod People, Nukie or Mac and Me?
