Book 2 of his Age of Madness trilogy...but book 9 of his chronological First Law world. It was fantastic. The previous entry spent a lot of time introducing characters and laying the groundwork of both who they are and where this world is at politically...and this book had the time to burn it all down is a glorious fashion. Theres still a book left in this trilogy but this for sure feels like a solid climax. Basically civil war erupted and theres some decided defeats of several main players. But with a few revelations it's clear that the real threat wasn't gonna come storming the ramparts. The character work is on point as usual for an Abercrombie novel. Clover remains one of my favorites. He's a wise man playing the coward surrounded by dumb men playing at bravado. Rikke is great now too. She's a full blown witch. I like both Savine and Vick as well. You can see Gloktas inspiration in both of them at times. Overall I just felt really invested in this story especailly the closer it got to the end. Clover and his men surprising Stour on the boat was my favorite moment.
If you haven't started reading Joe Abercrombie please check him out. I need more people to talk to about this series.
