I’ve said this before, and I’ll say it again.
Professional wrestling is not a Sport.
Sure, the performers are very fit and are doing very athletic things. But it’s exactly that - a performance.
It’s no more a sport than being a clown is, nor performing Hamlet in the Park….

I’ve said this before, and I’ll say it again. Professional wrestling is not a Sport. Sure, the performers are very fit and are doing very athletic things. But it’s exactly that - a performance. It’s no more a sport than being a clown is, nor performing Hamlet in the Park…. Sports Entertainment, no? 
But this is what I love about 'Sports Entertainment'. When it gets real. The realism of it all. When it's not a performance.
The picture above is of David Sammartino. Son of the Legendary Bruno Sammartino (many old timers consider him the greatest wrestler ever.)
Anywho - David wasn't happy with the way his character was being booked/pushed/written. In the clip below in my hometown he was supposed to beat this jobber (a nobody) named Ron Shaw. Sammartino wanted out of his contract and wanted to leave the WWF (quit or get fired). Albeit his character was scripted to win this match - he sandbags it. He literally does nothing in the ring. Shaw and the ref are incredibly confused. Sammartino - supposed to win - submits during a bearhug making sure he screams loud enough he quits that there's nothing the ref can do other than stop the fight
Pretty real, eh? Sammy later came back to the WWF in 1988 and then was fired for legit punching a fan in New York - and this is what I love about old school pro wrestling (can't watch today's product and haven't for around 20 years) - the realism of it

No. A guy throwing a fake fight is no more real than a guy winning one. In fact, it's even more fake. He didn't even bother with the scripted performance.

Vinny Ru comes down to the ring and legit fires The Hulkster for it and it's the last time the Hulkster was seen in WCW - was a giant lawsuit over it

I haven't seen this. Nor will I know. But I posit that Rocky 3 is about as much a sport as pro wrestling is. Which is to say it's not, and neither are. |
