Based on a short story by Joe Hill (a.k.a. Stephen King's son) about a boy who is kidnapped by a serial killer of children. The movie, in my opinion, is not very good. Some bad dialogue here, a few not-so-great performances there, a storyline with the sister that seems like it's important but doesn't effect the outcome of the movie at all, and an unsatisfying ending. Ethan Hawke is decent as the antagonist, and James Ransone is funny in the few scenes he has, but this is one that can be skipped.

I thought the trailer showed a bit too much. Couldn’t tell if it was the best parts or not.

After reading NOS4ATU last year, should've guessed.
Crazy ass true story on that note, the day I finished reading that tome, I got in the car that night and was driving, it was late summer, 90+ degrees, and out of nowhere, the song I'm listening to on the radio cuts out halfway through and Jackson 5's "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" came on.

I really enjoyed it. I went in knowing NOTHING about it, I didnt even watch the trailer so I had no idea what the black phone was and who if anybody was gonna call so i quite enjoyed the little plot developments.
To me it was perfectly atmospheric, with great acting (both Hawke and the boy were good but oh man, especially the girl was Sooo good in the dad argument moments) and cool makeup and design. Would for sure recommend. Was not bored a single minute.
8/10

Got my ticket for Saturday I wish a bit more story development was given to the supernatural/ESP elements, but the brother/sister bond was phenomenal and Hawke is terrifying. Just a legit good thriller/horror, probably something I'll put on during a date night or Netflix and chill lol when date says they wanna see something horror-wise they haven't yet. Love Derrickson's direction, Sinister is one of my favorite horrors and I enjoy his aesthetics and how he shoots certain scenes and builds tension.

Spoiler question now that more people have seen the movie. Seriously, storywise, why did the sister need to have those visions? In the end, they amounted to nothing. They had no effect on her brother escaping. Even as far as a, "Well, at least they found those bodies, and the families will be able to bury the dead" standpoint, surely the police would've found the bodies eventually after realizing Ethan Hawke owned that house. What was the f***ing point?

What was the f***ing point? I actually kinda liked that. It felt unique. It was a unique conincidence how it worked out in the end. Felt less “movie like” if you know what I mean.
