Hmm I always assumed it was, well up until Season 5 when it changed. How could Bates Motel have been a prequel to Psycho when it's clearly set in the 21st century? I don't think smartphones existed in the 50s. I could've sworn I read that it was supposed to depict what happened prior to the events that occured in Psycho, only they obviously modernized it. |

In the early seasons, A&E promoted it as a prequel to Psycho, so I see why people were confused. |
