Didnt love Elvis. Spectacular visuals and all but I was mostly bored for some reason. Even though the acting of the kid was good. Not his fault for sure that I was bored. It was the story or complete LACK of it that bothered me. Anybody else felt that way? I barely stayed till the end. 6/10 and thats only for the productions design that was indeed costly and beautiful especially the retro stuff. But the script proven to be the buggest problem for me. Too many odd Time jumps and too much voiceover covering up for what felt like a lack of story - plus it couldnt decide whos story it was really telling

Haven't watched but everything I've heard is that Butler is amazing but it's too long and some of the modern music is awkward and unnecessary.

And like with Lightyear, it relies too much on people knowing and loving Elvis already, so it doesnt really develop him much as his own unique character. But yes Butler does a great job.

There isn't much story to tell.
Dumb good looking kid gets famous for exciting girls by shaking a guitar, gets them all together with all the money and drugs available, gets told to be an actor because music fads don't last, returns for a brief spectacle and ends up singing for a wealthy aging audience, lives in a bubble, gets high, fat, bored and dies in the bathroom.
There is good material for a documentary, not so much for engaging drama.

Took me out of the non story even more.

I had a lot of fun with it. It told his story in an engaging way without bogging itself down in an overwrought, 'then came the drugs' biopic fashion. It does a have a few scenes like that, but mostly it focuses on what drove Elvis to be a performer, his different phases of fame, etc. Hanks is weird, but he's playing a bit of a weird guy. Movie needed a foil and a framework with which to tell the story, Hanks provided both.
It's not incredibly detailed storytelling, but it provides the basics for Elvis's story-- his black artist influences and how he was a huge part of the popularization of that sound; his ability to crossover musical genres and continue to be successful. And it was fun to hear the music on a theater sound system.
Again not the 'definitive' Elvis story delving into the nitty gritty (not that it avoided the negatives), but I think that was a conscious choice on Lurhmann's part. I think he wanted to make a movie about the way he views Elvis's legacy, not a cliched pop artist biopic. Honestly I was worried it would go over the top with Luhrmannisms, but it was pretty tame in that regard. If you aren't particularly interested in Elvis, it probably isn't a movie you need to watch. But if you're at least a casual fan, it's worth seeing.

I usually like the sub-genre of musician biopics, and I quite like Baz Luhrmann’s movies, but there was something missing here. I also considered leaving in the middle when I looked at the time and saw that there was still over one hour to go.
The actor who played Elvis did a great job, I thought. Tom Hanks, not so much - starting with the prosthetics, which I always hate. You can’t give an actor with a face as well-known as Tom Hanks a fake nose without it becoming distracting.

ELVIS has effective dramatic moments, but overall, it's an over-long by-the-numbers biopic. You can't even call it unique, since there have already been other dramatizations about the life of the King of Rock & Roll, including the 2005 mini-series of the same name. While we're on that subject, I'm going to write a sentence I never thought I would write: Fucking Randy Quaid did a better job than Tom Hanks! What world are we living in?! But yeah, his performance is bafflingly bad, while Austin Butler's is very good. You'd think that a director known for his colorful and energetic style would be the perfect choice to make a movie about a man who was showmanship personified. Unfortunately, Baz Luhrmann's aesthetic decisions feel limited. The sets, props and costumes aren't hyper-stylized, because they're meant to be historically accurate. His distinct vision is still present when it comes to Mandy Walker's cinematography and Jonathan Redmond and Matt Villa's editing, except that those elements aren't in sync with the beat of the song playing in each scene. Most of the cuts, angles and camera movements seem to happen at random.
5/10

Too many odd Time jumps and too much voiceover covering up for what felt like a lack of story - plus it couldnt decide whos story it was really telling I saw it 4 times. Were you not smitten with Butler?
If there was a big flaw in the film for me, it was the casting of the Australian actress, Olivia DeJonge, as Priscilla. She seemed a bit amateurish and was just plainly attractive, not sultry attractive. Her acting appeared forced and in a film that was going for authenticity of looks for its main character, to make it as believable as possible that we are watching Elvis, it needed to afford Priscilla the same courtesy.
I am not a fan of Baz Luhrmann, yet I found his hyped kinetic style of directing, seemed to work in well with the film here.
That is a good point you have made about time jumps and voiceover, but I wasn't aggravated by it. It is difficult to encompass an entire life of an iconic artist in just 2.5hrs. Baz wanted a longer cut apparently, (we may still get one on dvd/streaming), yet I feel he focused more on the relevant aspects he needed too to get the message across and this accumulated in the extended Vegas sequences.
ph yes Butler did great and was very charming and is super talented yes. But overal it just didnt click with me so much, mostly because of the pacing I think. (but compared to movies like Avatar or Babylon it was a masterpiece yes )

My worst movie of 2022. Makes Moonfall look like Citizen Kane.....
An all-out assault on the senses that can shatter the will of even pro athletes, director Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis biopic is so unbearable that it makes a strong case for why studios should always retain some oversight over auteurs(Sorry talentless "directors")

The theatrical return was announced by Jeff Goldstein, President of Domestic Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures who stated: “Since its release in June, it has remained clear that Baz Luhrmann’s ‘Elvis’ has real staying power with audiences of all ages, much like Elvis Presley’s own enduring popularity. We congratulate Baz, Austin and everyone involved in making ‘Elvis’ on their much-deserved nominations from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. In light of this exciting news, we felt that fans of the film would appreciate another chance to celebrate this incredible cinematic achievement again by seeing it on the big screen.” collider.com/elvis-movie-theater-return/
