Has anyone seen this film ?
if you like Scorsesse and Romance this is a masterpiece. It just has the visuals of any other Scorsesse film but this time he gets out of his comfort zone on the story.
Apart it breaks the cliche that Scorsesse always puts women in a bad light here Countess Olenska played beautifully by Michelle Pfieffer is an independent smart and modern woman someone ahead of her times but cares to what is right.
she could have easily stolen her cousin's fiancé and she decided to not do it because he wouldn't be then the men she admired. May also incredibly well played by Winona Ryder she is a little manipulative but she fight for what she believes is hers and gave Newland a way out and asked him if he wanted to cancel the engagement.
Then is Newland the one who created the love triangle and is struggling what he should do if staying with May because they are engaged or cancel everything to be with the woman he loves. Daniel Day Lewis gives one of his most amazing performances ever he really did a great job of playing this guy trapped in so many rules, like the countess he is open minded and quite ahead of his times he likes with opinions and who apeak their minds.
sooo to anyone who loves a good romance with characters which aren't so black and white and love Scorsesse irs a film i strongly suggest 10/10 .

I really like this film, and it's a shame it hasn't received more praise. It's pretty faithful to the book, and hits the right balance of portraying the mores of the time without looking sappy or soap-opera. Period dramas, particularly romantic tragedies, don't seem to play well to a wide audience. Pfieffer was stunning.

My favorite Scorsese film. One of the better movies of the nineties and arguably Scorsese's best picture to date.

I haven't read the book but nice to know Scorsesse got pretty close to its source material and yes period pieces tend to go into the soap opera territory but this one didn't and the characters looked real then.

Great movie! I absolutely love it and it's definitely in my top 5 films that he's directed. Within the first five minutes you get a view of amazing attention to detail and then the story kicks in and you're just hooked. Pfeiffer was stunning and all involved were A+

for me i would say his most underrated is The Color of Money (1986) which never seems to get enough credit. but maybe some people dis it because it's not as good as The Hustler (1961) and while i agree it's not as good as that, it's still a strong movie.
but to comment on the movie in the topic... i can't comment much on The Age of Innocence (1993) as i have not seen it but just given my impression of it with the subject matter and trailer (i just watched the trailer a moment ago) i don't think i would think all that much of it. but with that said, it's possible i could like it (i just don't see myself scoring it higher than a 6/10 basically(i hope i am wrong as i like when i underestimate movies but that just don't happen much)).
hell, i might get around to seeing this soon enough as there are not many Scorsese movies i have not seen but this is one of them.
p.s. for those who don't know... The Color of Money (1986) is a sequel to The Hustler (1961).

I always loved this film. I don't know if I would say it's the MOST underrated film by Scorsese (I think Bringing Out the Dead takes that spot) but it's a beautiful film with gorgeous cinematography and terrific acting by everyone involved.

Fantastic film! Very underrated! Pfeiffer and Day-Lewis are fantastic! Even Wynonna shines! So true and I don't like Day Lewis. Literary period films put many people off, because many can require a lot more concentration than your average popcorn flick. Like the best period films, the secret is in the sauce and the devil is in the details and the substance can taste exquisite. Remains Of The Day from the same year is just as fine and either of these films were worthy of Best Picture of 93', over Spielberg's over-rated and bland holocaust epic.
Schindlers list was a very good film i think it deserved best picture. but The Age of Innocence should have been nominated, it was a wonderful film the first Scorsesse did for hos female audiences like a reward for handling so much violence and murderes in his past films hehe. i haven't seen remains of the day but if you say its one of the best period pieces im gonna see it, since im a fan of period pieces the good and the bad ones and even the Sappy ones like The Other Boleyn Girl

For Scorsese's most underrated, I would have to pick:
"Kundun" (1997), followed by "The Color of Money" (1986).

Great movie, with an amazing cast, including two of my all-time favorite actors: Michael Gough and Norman Lloyd.

I love this movie.
Scorsese clearly thought he was creating something brutal, violent on a non-physical level - to judge from interviews and comments. But what he made instead was something warm and velvety and inviting, despite the sad themes. It's his first, but not last such film and I think it ushers in the better half of his career.

Well i finally got around to seeing The Age of Innocence (1993) just now for the first time and... that was like watching paint dry as i had to force myself to make it to even the 30 minute mark of the movie and then i killed it due to boredom. easily Scorsese's worst movie i have seen and i have seen a fairly large portion of his filmography.
it's funny how the OP and I praise The Thomas Crown Affair (1999) (it's amongst my Top 29 movies) but yet are nearly polar opposites on this movie in the topic.

I'd like to echo the many appreciative sentiments expressed on this thread. Terrific movie-making from Martin Scorsese.

Most underrated Scorsese for me is King Of Comedy. Just a really well done dark comedy, with a hell of an ending with lots to say about notoriety and fame.
