Welcome back to another week of the BEST & WORST edition of 'what movies did you see last week?' thread. For those who haven't been part of it before, basically your host (me) posts my weekly movies and you can comment on those and list your movie for the same time frame. I will get back to you on yours and you can talk to other users here about their films. It's a great place to talk about film. FIRST TIME MOVIE VIEWINGPark Row (1952, Samuel Fuller)Set in New York’s 1880’s newspaper district a dedicated journalist manages to set up his own paper. It is an immediate success but attracts increasing opposition from one of the bigger papers and its newspaper heiress owner. Strong story, direction and performances. 7/10Jasper Jones (2017, Rachel Perkins) NetflixAustralian coming of age movie with a mystery in the middleman it. Mostly solid affair with a few bright spots but also a few cliches. 6.5/10Q&A (1990, Sidney Lumet)A young district attorney seeking to prove a case against a corrupt police detective encounters a former lover and her new protector, a crime boss who refuses to help him. It’s a solid enough production but the dialogue feels like it’s trying a bit too hard. 6/10Men (2022, Alex Garland)I’ve seen all of the directors film and television projects and this is the first to be a bit of a let down. I liked the first half with its more subtle creepiness but didn’t care for the second which devolved into body horror. 5.5/10The Odessa File (1974, Ronald Neame)An okay enough post war thriller but it all feels a little stiff. 5/10Terror on the Prairie (2022, Michael Polish)This gory western is nicely enough made visually with beautiful scenery but the story and characters did little for me and the two leads were not too great either. 4.5/10REPEAT MOVIE VIEWINGGhosts of Mississippi (1996, Rob Reiner)Alec Baldwin stars in this film based on actual events where a black activist is murdered in 1963, and much of the evidence points towards a white supremacist (James Woods). Solid stuff all around with a great leading performance from Alec Baldwin as the prosecuting attorney. 6.5/10FIRST TIME DOCUMENTARY VIEWING Girl in the Picture (2022, Skye Borgman) NetflixA young mother’s mysterious death and her son’s subsequent kidnapping blow open a decades-long mystery about the woman’s true identity, and the murderous federal fugitive at the center of it all. Unfortunately the documentary is not as exciting as the true story it’s based on, although it is solid enough. Solid Documentary FIRST TIME TV VIEWING The Umbrella Academy (2020, Season Two)NetflixWell i started watching this season when it came out and sporadically from then on and now I’ve finally finished it. It’s patchy at times but the last few eps land. Good TV WEEKLY FILM AWARDSBEST FILM: Park Row BEST ACTOR: Alec Baldwin - Ghosts of Mississippi BEST ACTRESS: Jessie Buckley - Men BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR: Paul Calderon- Q&A BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS: Toni Collette - Jasper Jones BEST EDITING: Phillip Cahn - Park Row BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY: John L. Russell- Park Row BEST SCORE: Antony Partos - Jasper Jones BEST SCRIPT: Samuel Fuller - Park Row BEST DIRECTOR: Samuel Fuller - Park Row 10/10 - Perfection (or as close to it as possible) 09/10 - An Excellent film 08/10 - A VERY Good film 07/10 - A Good film 06/10 - A Solid film 05/10 - An Average film 04/10 - Below Average film 03/10 - A mostly bad film 02/10 - A mostly terrible film 01/10 - Awful through and through 00/10 - Not only awful but offensive too Hi, Dark. Yours: Q&A 8/10 I like it actually. Pretty intense, the cast is good. Loved Armand Assante. Nick Nolte too. Ghosts of Mississippi 5/10 Saw it ages ago. I remember not liking it much. Mine: Molly's Game 8/10 Aaron Sorkin movie, with Jessica Chastain. It's about an ex Olympic skiier who after quitting her career for an injury finds herself entering the world of underground poker, with very rich and connected players and ends up running a big operation in NY, linked to the Russian mob. It's a true story. I liked it, Jessica Chastain is really good. I liked Idris Elba too. Magic 8/10 It's a movie with Anthony Hopkins and Ann-Margret, it's a horror/thriller, Richard Attenborough directed it, it's about a ventriquolist, who's about to hit it big, with guest spots with Johnny Carson, and his own tv show, but in reality, he has a split personality, his puppet is the other one, He meets a woman he used to have a crush on in high school, and things fall apart for real. I like it, it's pretty good, quite creepy. Anthony Hopkins is really great. Loved Burgess Meredith took, he plays his big shot agent. The Conformist 10/10 It's Bernardo Bertolucci movie, with Jean-Louis Trintignant. It's about a man working for the secret service of the Fascist regime in Italy before WW2, who's ordered to kill an anti fascist intellectual, living in Paris in exile. The movie follows this and, in flashback, the life of the man up until that point. It's really a classic, so dark and powerful, disturbing, sensual too. Also, I had never seen it before and I actually watched it in a theatre, I'm glad I did, it's so beautiful visually. Jean-Louis Trintignant is fantastic. Stefania sandrelli is great too, she plays her fiancèe and then wife. Also, she's really gorgeous. The Loves of a Blonde 8/10 It's a Milos Forman movie, from the 60s, before he left Czechoslovakia. It's about a girl working in a factory in a small town, and her love life, especially with a pianist who arrived in town to play for an event. I liked it, I found it a bit hard to get into it at first, then I did. I thought it was very sweet. Showdown in Little Tokyo 6/10 It's a movie with Dolph Lundgren and Brandon Lee, it's about two L.A. cops who face the boss of a Yakuza gang, that's expanding in L.A. and plans to sell a new drug. O.K., it's so-so, IMO, not really good maybe, but it's very over the top, a bit trashy , I thought it was kind of fun. Brandon Lee is cool, Dolph is a bit weak though. Hey Billy big week for you early too:) yours mollys game - big fan. You do know that Michael Cera was playing tobey maguire in this? 8/10 magic - big fan, Hopkins is terrific 8/10 The conformist - I actually really didn’t like this but I remember very little now 3/10 Showdown in little Tokyo - pretty cheap ,””, has its moments though 5/10

First Time Viewing Bring Me The Head Of Alfredo Garcia (1974; Sam Peckinpah) - Try as I might, I just can't get excited about this director's work, and this is perhaps the least interesting of his films I've seen so far. It feels very drawn-out and slow, and not even the action-heavy last act worked for me. In theory this could've been a gripping story, but instead it's cold and distant with the characters remaining too aloof and unlikeable. 5/10 The Olsen Gang's Escape Over the Fence (1981; Erik Balling) - The Olsen Gang was an incredibly popular Danish comedy series about a trio of somewhat competent but unlucky thieves whose leader and mastermind Egon always ends up in jail at the end of each movie. This was part one of the two-part finale which sees the gang pull their latest heist targeting a large insurance company and their corrupt leader. Some great gags and overall just fun old-fashioned entertainment. 7/10 Where Eagles Dare (1968; Brian G. Hutton) - Totally ludicrous World War II movie, featuring the dumbest nazis you'll ever see. Richard Burton gives it his best effort, but Clint Eastwood is rather useless as the second lead, coming over as arrogant and bored. 4/10 TV Better Caul Saul - season 1 - Having only seen the first season of Breaking Bad I thought I'd give this a try after enjoying Bob Odenkirk's performance in Nobody. He's very good here too, but the series has some pacing issues and overall just didn't feel as gripping as it could've been. 6/10 Repeat Viewing:
Never Talk To Strangers (1995; Peter Hall) - Mediocre erotic thriller which feels like a lesser Brian De Palma picture. 5.5/10 Three Amigos (1986; John Landis) - I enjoyed this when I originally saw it as a kid, but like so much of Martin's work it hasn't aged too well. It's still sweet and silly and has some inspired moments, but I feel like I've just grown out of comedies like this. 6/10 Bring he the head of Alfred Garcia- I know people like this one but I ended up switching it off where eagles dare - saw this as a kid, not sure what I’d think now three amigos - saw all or most of this as a kid, I’m not the biggest Steve Martin fan, especially in comedies .

I actually had no idea. I thought Leo for a second, but he was too geeky to be Leo. Tobey Maguire might not be very happy about the portrayal. He comes off as a bit psycho-esque, in the end. Richard Attenborough should have directed maybe more horror/thrillers.

None of yours this week:
The Batman (2022) - 7/10 A different approach of a Batman film. More of a mystery Noir that a basic superhero film. Rather slow paced as well. I liked it but not one of the best Batman films.
Morbius (2022) - 4/10 Very generic Vampire/superhero film. Watchable but pretty predictable.
Happy Death Day (2017) - 6/10 Fun Groundhog Day like horror film. The PG-13 rating holds it back.
Happy Death Day 2U (2019) - 4/10 Not as fun sequel that forgets the horror.
Quiz (2020) - 5/10 True story of the people who cheated at Who Wants to be a Molinare. Just OK.
Hellraiser: Inferno (2000) - 5/10 Alright but a lesser Hellraiser film that could have been better.
Infinite (2021) - 3/10 Lifeless Mark Wahlberg action film reminded me of a lesser Matrix film.

Hi there! Been a long time, not sure if anyone remembers me but I used to post as Shade_of_gray42 back in the day of the old IMDb board and ran this thread back then in Film General for quite some time. Good to see it still goes.
Yours:
Sorry to say none of yours this week.
My films:
Violent Cop (Takeshi Kitano, 1989)
First film of Takeshi Kitano as a director, and one of the few crime films I've seen by him where he plays a cop rather than a yakuza. Very "Dirty Harry" style crime thriller where Kitano is a cop who doesn't play by the rules. Made less derivative by some genuinely surprising scenes of violence. Even early on in his career, Kitano knew what he was doing. 8/10
Tom Jones (Tony Richardson, 1963)
An adaptation of Henry Fielding's (EXTREMELY LONG) novel. Winner of several Academy awards (including best picture and director) the film follows the comedic adventures of Tom Jones as he seemingly woos every woman he comes across and annoys every man. It's funny and a fairly faithful adaptation (as much as it can be at only two hours of a 1000 page book). Perhaps a bit too repetitive, but enjoyable. 7/10
The Lie (Veena Sud, 2018)
Watched this with a friend because we were bored and it was streaming on Amazon for free. Even at free I still feel cheated. Predictable and rather dull affair. 2/10
Amarcord (Federico Fellini, 1973)
I've only recently gotten into Fellini, but from what I've seen this is currently my second favorite (after 8 1/2). A film that just follows the lives of an entire town in 1930s Italy. No main character, just random lives. At times comedic, at others dramatic. It's a beautiful masterpiece. 9/10.
X (Ti West, 2022)
Shockingly good little horror film set in 1970s Texas in which a group go off to film a porno on the property of an older couple. Bad things happen. Works effectively as a horror playing with conventional Slasher tropes, but also has a lot of interesting things to say about the process of aging. 8/10

I have preferred a couple of his other titles to this one. However its certainly worth at least one watch and I always am interested in how indie film makers get around a limited budget. 5.5

Richard Attenborough should have directed maybe more horror/thrillers. Yeah his reputation for being like that kind of killed his career for a decade I actually didn't know he had that reputation. I mean, I would have never guessed it was meant to be him, from the movie.
