Panthers force game 7 - incredible that the historic Bruins allowed this to happen. The regular season is almost meaningless. Go Panthers!

Tampa Bay will win tonight 4-1, & the Leafs will be skating in cement shoes at home on Monday game 7. All the brass will be fired, Nylander &/or Tavares dealt, & the cosmic ballet of the Toronto Maple Leafs will go on.

THE LEAFS ARE IN THE SECOND ROUND I repeat: THE LEAFS ARE IN THE SECOND ROUND That should be the norm, not a party. Now the real work commences. Samsonov channeling his inner Curtis Joseph in net last night won the game.

...aaaaaand that's why the regular season is meaningless. President's Trophy is becoming a dangerous thing to win. Esp when the 2022-23 Bruins seemed to have it clinched in December.

...aaaaaand that's why the regular season is meaningless. Completely predictable ending to a truly bizarre season for the Bruins. It's not like this was some legendary stacked team in the midst of a dynasty. They were pulling this off with smoke and mirrors all season. I've been waiting for the bottom to fall out, though I didn't expect it until maybe the conference finals. Presidents Trophy winners never win the cup anymore, the playoffs are a completely different animal. And this isn't a typical "Rey hates his teams no matter how good they are" post, it's just someone who understands playoff hockey. There was a point toward the end of the final regular season game where Jack Edwards went on this rant, throwing out all of these meaningless stats; "Led the league in goals against; led the league in goals in the first period; led the league in goals on Tuesdays with a guy named Mitch sitting in the third row;" that type of shit for like five minutes-- I muted it, and I'm a Bruins fan. And the whole time all I could think was, and this is why they can't win the Cup. That type of production is unsustainable in the playoffs, particularly with a workman-like team like the Bruins have. But here's the weird thing. As a fan, due to everything I just mentioned, this isn't even a top five Boston sports disaster of my lifetime*. I'd still rank the 2007 Pats, the 2010 Pats (though I also knew they wouldn't win the title, losing to the Jets was inexcusable), the 2009-10 Bruins (up 3-0 in the series and 3-0 in game 7, and lost to the Flyers), the 1986 Red Sox, 2003 Red Sox, 2011 Red Sox; hell even the way the Bruins pissed away game 6 in the 2013 Cup Finals were all far worse to endure as a fan. Honestly, any Pats or Celtics playoff elimination hurts more, as those are my two favorite sports. (* Bucky Dent was technically in my lifetime, but as I was a year old, I can't say it affected me all that much.) To be clear, this isn't spin, or sugarcoating, or anything like that. It's a choke, a failure, an embarrassment, all that stuff. Any criticism from an outsider's perspective is fair and warranted. Rank this where you will among all-time North American sports disasters. I'm just saying that as a Boston sports fan, this one didn't catch me off guard (especially once it went to game 7), and wasn't the gut punch those other losses I mentioned were at the time. All that said, I know I get on people's nerves sometimes, bitching about successful teams. But if you want to know how I can be so cynical as a fan, this is exhibit Z. I haven't even mentioned the blowout Super Bowl losses in XX and XXXI (again because I never thought those teams could win), or the Revolution's five MLS Cup Final Appearances (including three in a row at one point) without a win. I'm a prove-it-to-me kind of guy, I don't buy into the hype until you've proven you can reach the pinnacle. You either win the title, or you're just another team that couldn't get it done. In summation, yeah I'm bummed. But no more or less than I am after any playoff elimination. I feel terrible for the players though, they're never going to live this down. Boston now has two teams that have the best regular season records in their sport, and neither won the title. Yay us, I guess?

...aaaaaand that's why the regular season is meaningless. It’s kinda sad but basically true. I mean die hard fans will remember regular season stuff. And to say it’s completely meaningless too is almost like saying it shouldn’t happen. The playoffs are most exciting, but there’s something fun about the regular season too. Ultimately though championships are what people remember and mean the most in the long run. The regular season means nothing when it comes to competing for a championship.

Boston now has two teams that have the best regular season records in their sport, and neither won the title. Yay us, I guess? Overall, it’s a pretty embarrassing loss for the Bruins. To set a record and be so dominant in the regular season only to lose in the first round. Even if what they were doing was unsustainable I don’t think anyone expected them to fall apart so quickly. For me, it definitely ranks up there as one of the worst losses in North American sports history. For me, as a Boston sports fan the patriots losing in the 07/08 superbowl is definitely the worst and most upsetting loss I’ve ever seen. I don’t think anything can ever top that. My top 3 favorite sports are baseball, football and basketball. I like hockey enough but I’m far from a diehard fan. So it’s hard for me to put this Bruins loss in a die hard hockey fan perspective, but I think it’s gotta be somewhere in the top 5 worst losses in Boston sports history.
