I first approuched this forum administrator and asked him if we could work together to make a forum with good software and powerful servers. The admin gladly agreed, I started making the forum but now the admin wants to keep this forum. Hi Alex. In the interest of transparency for all, I was simply declining your suggestion to disable registration for this board with a notice of redirection to IMDf. As you said, everyone is entitled to go where they want, and so with that in mind, I don't think it's a good idea to even attempt to bottleneck the options that are currently available, each of which have their own list of pros and cons. This is true. I still believe the best idea is to have per-forum moderators that are elected by the members of each. Ideally most everyone from IMDb will eventually end up at the same place, and whether it's here, IMDf or some other site, one person cannot possibly moderate every forum and post if there are thousands of users. In my opinion, the fairest method of moderation that doesn't resemble tyranny is to adopt a neighborhood watch type of system with a democratically elected captain (or two) for each "block." As for my administrator status on IMDf, my strength is more in creation and modification, so I'm not sure how much help I can be there without the ability to do those things, but I'm definitely willing to do what I can and I appreciate your trust in me, as well as your cooperation. This should not be a cut-throat venture, and the fact that you did contact me to discuss your ideas speaks volumes about your integrity. I plan on posting an announcement in the next day or two regarding these issues along with some suggestions I have in mind, but for now, I just want to be clear that I have no plans of either shutting this board down or disabling registration.

That's clear, thank you admin. I'll wait for your announcement and suggestions. Glad that the name calling business from some members can stop now (hopefully).

I'm sorry, Alex Vojacek, I'm afraid I didn't explain myself well. I didn't mean the website was obscure, I meant the name Internet Media Discussion Forums was a bit obscure. I'm big on names. It sounds to me like a forum that discusses media found on the internet: articles, music, photographs, and, yes, movies and TV. I think the focus should be on movies and TV, and many movies and TV are not watched on the internet. People looking for a forum to discuss movies and TV could very well pass over it, and we will need new traffic. I understand the temptation to use a derivative of IMDb for the name recognition, but I think you're treading dangerous legal waters there. It would be tragic to build the site up, just to have it taken down for copyright infringement. Happens to businesses all the time. Why take the chance? Like I say, I like to keep things simple, so Movie & TV Forums worked for me. In no way did I mean to undermine your website. I think it's a great website, and I can tell you worked very hard on it. I know how much time these things can take. Please accept my apology if you think I was tearing it down. I also understand not wanting to collide with another person's project. I think we all freaked out when we heard the boards were being shut down, and wanted to do something. The problem, as someone else pointed out, is too many websites will splinter the traffic, and then none of them will have enough traffic to sustain itself. You really do need a vibrant population for this to work. I think the best and brightest minds should get together and work on this. I'm sorry the administrator of this site didn't want to work with you, because I think you both have killer websites.

I also see that someone with killer software is recreating this site on Internet Media Discussion Forums, but that seems a little obscure to me. I want to discuss movies and TV shows, and they're not necessarily always on the internet. Alex, rebecca wasn't calling your site obscure, only that the name may not be as clear as it could be. Then again, "Internet Movie Database" doesn't really describe IMDb either. But to people already familiar with IMDb (v1.0), the name "Internet Media Discussion Forums" (and especially the letters IMDF) seemed familiar enough to make me want to check it out and see how similar it is to the original IMDb message boards. To me it seems counterproductive to have two similar boards competing for the same user base, but maybe the competition will be healthy. Just try and keep it civil okay? We're all (hopefully) trying to achieve the same thing - a place for former IMDb forum users to continue their discussions and stay connected. P.S. Rebecca explained herself better than I could, but I didn't see her follow-up post until after I posted this message!

I'm sorry the administrator of this site didn't want to work with you, because I think you both have killer websites. But I do want to work with him, and so I am. I'm sorry if someone said anything that implied otherwise. I've just been a bit preoccupied with tweaking this site and haven't had much time to really delve into his just yet. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

Thanks, Grayovac, I felt so bad that Alex Vojacek thought I was tearing his site down. Just the opposite. I'm extremely impressed by both his website and this one.
And after I posted my comment, I saw the administrator did reply to Alex, so I'll be anxious to hear his announcement in the next day or two.
I know what you mean about the name Internet Movie Database, too! Is it just for movies on the internet? But back when it started, I don't think there were any movies on the internet (I had a dial-up connection), so I think the name was just to convey it was an internet database for movies. If it was starting today, they might have chosen a different name. The quandary is: Do we go with name recognition or play it safe?
Cheers!

Good to hear, Administrator! I completely understand being preoccupied. And there's been so much back and forth, that it's hard to keep up with it. If there's anything I can do to help, just let me know.

How about:
- IME (Internet Movie and Entertainment)

Well to be honest, I was going to call the site "The Movie Base" but the Admin suggested that it would be better to call it "internet media discussion board" "IMDB" and I refuse because that could be a direct threat to IMDB brand so I changed a letter and call it Internet Media Discussion Forums.
To be honest, the real name I choose was Internet Movie Forums (IMF) but between checking domain names and trying, it endup being called imdforums.
I will switch the name for just "Internet Media Forums", I can't change the do main name to imforums since it is already taken so it's gonna stay that way, but the real name will be Internet Media Forums from now on.
The suggestion to change "movie" to "media" was not mine, it came from one of the users on this forum.
I'm so glad that the admin backed me up and I'm looking forward to work with you, be it to improve this forum or mine, I still believe there is space for both of us, no need to fight and I'm glad that this got resolved. I hope people be more kind to each other, we are both trying our best to come up with options before imdb is closed for good.

On the one hand it's a copyrighted name on the other hand is Amazon going to consider a freeforum as a threat to their copyright? Free things come and go on the internet, Amazon may feel it's not worth their time. Very true, persia, it may fly completely under the radar of Amazon. On the other hand, if it does get big, or worse, gets some negative publicity, which could very well happen if someone posts something controversial, you can bet Amazon will clamp down on it. The last thing they want is to be associated with some controversy they have no control over.

Alex, all we had was a disagreement about whether or not to disable registration here. I feel compelled to make it clear to everyone that there's been no fighting or competing between you and I, and that we both have the same goal in mind, which is to provide the best possible replacement for the IMDb discussion boards.

Wait. Alex told you to disable registration, and move all the users to his site. And if the site flourishes, he personally asks people for donations (like he is asking even now) and he earns money and perhaps he becomes rich and famous like Col Needham ?? What is he, Bill Gates or something? He is behaving like him. And he looks kinda like him too. Great decision Admin 'John Carter' << (real name *rolls eyes*) not to be duped by Alex.

'John Carter' << (real name *rolls eyes*) John is actually my middle name, but I hate my first name so much that I stopped using it many years ago. I suppose I could show my driver's license, but that would require me to care whether or not anyone believes that it is indeed my real name. I'm old enough that I had to deal with Jimmy Carter jokes, and the past few years have been jokes about the movie, so how about a little empathy here? ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

Facebook trademarks the word 'face'
". . . (T)echnology companies see trademark power grabs and suing each other as recreational sport . . . " Can Facebook Trademark the Word 'Face'? They've already had some success with "book""Facebook's separate fight over 'book,' on the other hand, has been more of a David vs. Goliath saga. Although in this case Facebook is Goliath, and Goliath wins. As CNNMoney reported Thursday, Facebook is suing start-up site Teachbook.com -- which claims it is merely a teacher's community. The social networking giant also forced the travel site PlaceBook to change its name to TripTrace earlier this month." Just so you know . . .

I say yes, to avoid it being taken down for "violating a copyrighted name". It could be anything! I mean really, take everyone's suggestions and vote on them. As long as people are using this forum, we'll get used to the new name!

I was just shopping around names. One of my options was already said. I'll let you know when I have more.

At least " John Carter is retro Burroughs cool. Is your first name Byron ? Because I would ABSOLTELY go by something - anything - other than that. Trust me.

How about Internet Movie Discussion Forums (IMDF)? Close but different enough to avoid any legal action. They don't have a copyright claim on anything that sounds even remotely similar, after all. It's not a big emergency though. At the moment Amazon doesn't have this site on its radar. If they send you some kind of cease and desist order, you can always change the name then.
