Well it seems they're definitely going for a tone similar to Guardians of the Galaxy, but it does look fun.

This actually looks like it could be a lot of fun! Loved the use of "Whole Lotta Love" and I keep forgetting Hugh Grant is in this as the villain Speaking of Hugh Grant, on top of being a very talented actor he also has a great self deprecating sense of humor (as shown during this year's Comic Con) www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/dungeons-dragons-first-look-comic-con-chris-pine-1235184234/I honestly don't know anything about D&D other than from that hilarious South Park episode and what I've seen while watching Stranger Things, but I am quite relieved that the director(s) aren't going the "super duper serious" route that Duncan Jones went with in his Warcraft movie that ended up being a box office bomb & panned by audiences/critics alike. Plus, this D&D reboot actually looks like it has a big budget unlike the laughably cheap Thora Birch one. Hopefully its entertaining

and Hugh Grant compared it to Monty Python Holy Grail, lol Didn't get that vibe from the trailer either. Just describe it as GOTG meets LOTR. I think people can wrap their heads around that.

I wasn't sold the first time I saw the trailer the other day, but I'm feeling it now. It looks like it could be a lot of fun.

In an interview with ET, the British star reveals why he took the unexpected turn to blockbuster action. Grant admits "because it was funny," citing the comedic screenplay, which pokes fun at the traditions and cliches of the well-known game. He adds that despite his uncertainty about the material, the script "genuinely made me laugh," and the humor was "a big appeal." It explains why Grant, who doesn't usually pop up in big franchise films, has decided to play against type. screenrant.com/dungeons-dragons-movie-2023-hugh-grant-cast-explained/

Apparently it had test screenings:
DALEY: We're basically locked in terms of the edit. We still have a lot of VFX work coming in, a lot of music that we need to conform and stuff. Beyond that, I think the thing that we learned the most from our test screenings was that it really appealed, not just to D&D fans, [but] people that had no idea what they were watching when they were going into the test screening actually were engaged, and they didn't think that they would be because it's a D&D movie, and it's got us not necessarily a stigma, but it has a lot of baggage attached to it in terms of what people expect out of it. I think that was like a pleasant surprise for a lot of people.
GOLDSTEIN: Especially women are loving it too. Which D&D is not necessarily thought of as, but in fact it is, and I think if handled right, it should be. Because it's all about characters, it's all about the people feeling real and relatable. We tried to tell the story of some people who are not superheroes by any means, they kind of suck at a lot of things, but they're great at other things. So how do you make those skills come to the fore? How do you tell the story where they all get to kind of level up over the movie?

When asked about whether Paramount is already pushing for a cinematic universe, directors Daley and Goldstein assured there was no studio pressure to build ideas for future films, but confirmed they may have ideas for a sequel. See what the duo shared below: Goldstein: "There was no pressure put on us to think in terms of a cinematic universe. We obviously wanted to create characters and an environment that could grow, and that had the potential for more films, but that wasn't at all in the forefront of our approach to this." Daley: "By the way, that's a testament to the studios, because I think sometimes the studios put the cart before the horse and try to create these cinematic universes before the first movie even comes out. So I think they were smart and savvy enough to know that the first one's got to work before you even dive into the others. That said, I think it's a really good jumping-off point for a lot of other potential movies to come after it."

its refreshing to hear how grounded & humble they sound (especially compared to those douchebag Russo brothers' nauseatingly smug interviews while promoting that $250 million dollar turd The Gray Man ) . And I'm very pleased that the test screenings have been positive overall.

It sounds like they were trying to (and succeeding at) make at fun film, with good characters with a story that gives them room to breathe, and make the movie/characters be something you'd want to revisit in a sequel.

During a recent interview with Empire, Goldstein and Daley explained why the upcoming Dungeons & Dragons movie is a comedy and in turn, why it won't insult the original game or its passionate fans. The Honor Among Thieves writers-directors explains that the "spirit of the game [on which the film is based]... D&D is a group of people around the table, taking the piss out of each other at times, but not taking the piss out of the game itself,” which is why they approached their film adaptation with the same spirit.
