Having appeared on the Masters of the Universe 40th Anniversary panel to announce his involvement in Kevin Smith’s latest animated offering, Shatner was later led by Smith in an hour-long conversation and Q&A session about his career, space travel, and everything Shatner. During audience questions, Shatner was asked about his thoughts on the current Star Trek franchise, and his response was not exactly positive. At 91 years old, there is not much that William Shatner has not done, and having been in the industry so long, he also doesn’t mind giving a frank opinion on franchises that he has been part of and ones that he hasn’t. After having a jibe at Star Wars fans, Shatner was asked if he believes any of the recent Star Trek series have rivaled the original series he was part of, and he simply replied, “None of them.” He then gave his opinion on what Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry would think of the franchise in its current form. He told a fan: “I got to know Gene Roddenberry in three years fairly well. He’d be turning in his grave at some of this stuff.” Despite his harsh comments about the franchise, earlier this year, Shatner did reach out to new Captain Kirk actor Paul Wesley to congratulate him on being cast in the role on Twitter, telling him to “Keep my ship and crew safe.” Wesley takes on the role of James Tiberius Kirk in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, and the actor also appeared at SDCC for Shatner's handprint ceremony during the event."

He's probably right.
I'll say this much:
None of the television/streaming/video incarnations of Star Trek beyond The Next Generation will ever make it to the big screen with the original actors in their original roles, much less with new actors in those roles.
You'll keep seeing recasting of The Original Series characters for some time, and maybe eventually The Next Generation, but for the rest, I doubt it.
Although Deep Space Nine, Voyager, and Enterprise are now classics and would deserve it more than the later series, they won't get that chance -- at least not on the big screen.
The Next Generation cast only made it to the big screen because they were the immediate successors of The Original Series cast, who paved the way for them.
Also, with The Next Generation, it was arbitrary, whereas with The Original Series cast, it was earned.

Agreed! He would have never put Black Women or Gays on his show! Um, GR did have a black woman on his show. And on and under him, too, reportedly. But he was definitely against having a bald guy be the lead of his second Star Trek show, which he also created and was the executive producer of.

Also isn't George Takei gay ? Wasn't he in the closet when TOS was on? Not saying that Roddenberry would have had an issue with him being gay but maybe he just wasn't aware of the fact?

“I got to know Gene Roddenberry in three years fairly well. He’d be turning in his grave at some of this stuff.” I wonder what he thinks Roddenberry's issue would be. Is it that he thinks Roddenberry would be "anti-woke" or is it that he wouldn't like the bigger focus on action etc? Or something else entirely? Personally I can't see Roddenberry being "anti-woke" given he was a hard progressive for his time though I could see him not liking the greater focus on action and relationships over exploration and philosophical discussion.

Watching this vid of 10 times Roddenberry hated Trek, seems like he didn't a lot of classic Trek and that includes Trek that fans clearly do and was received well. I feel there is a definite difference between what Trek was to Roddenberry and what it is to the fans.

I feel there is a definite difference between what Trek was to Roddenberry and what it is to the fans. The only criticism I agree with is Star Trek V, and I understand why Roddenberry thought Shatner was stealing "The God Thing". I strongly disagree with Roddenberry's views on the animated series, and agree with David Gerrold. TAS has (almost) the entire TOS cast, one of the original story editors in D.C. Fontana, and many of the same script writers. And it was first revealed in TAS that the "T" in James T. Kirk was short for "Tiberius". It's totally canon in my book!

GR didn't like any of the Star Trek movies following The Motion Picture, obviously because he got kicked to the curb.
However, he thought that Star Trek IV finally got it right with the time travel element, except according to him, the crew of the Enterprise should have gone back in time to prevent the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.
That would have seemed like a total contradiction of the point of "The City on the Edge of Forever," and also an indication that the crew didn't learn anything from that episode.
Plus, that would have been a pretty downbeat movie, the very antithesis of the movie we got, especially for the 20th anniversary.
