I feel like looks are the top priority and any shortfall in vocal talent is made up for by studio tweaks and tricks.

Since MTV, the visuals became more important in the music industry than the music itself. The thing is, it is a lot easier to give someone a makeover than to find a genuinely great musical talent. Look for talent first, worry about looks later. Many great bands and artists of the past would not have been given a chance based solely on looks.

Yes, but she would be encouraged to draw attention to her lack of traditional looks. If she were obese, she would almost feel obligated to champion herself as a fat pride poster girl.

Lady gaga is not all that attractive. Katy Perry looks scary without makeup. They can make people up pretty well. It's just if you're heavy, then the companies will tell you to lose weight.

Taylor Swift is doing quite well (officially skinny and ugly - I can't agree, but I'm a minority here))...and this whale...Adele (pretty face through).
And than there is this singer from Gossip who is almost as big as Adele.

Adele WAS pretty overweight when she got a record deal, but I find her very attractive these days. |

I never understood the supposed sex appeal of Taylor Swift. She's skeletal with less body fat than a starving Ethiopean, her ego can blot out the sun, and she spends her life writing dramatic songs about the million ways she's been wronged by various boy band members and former Disney actors.
Katy Perry is annoying and her music is terrible, but she does have spectacular natural breasts and she's hot when she's not caked in 45 lbs of makeup.
Lady Gaga gets away with being gross because she does all that pretentious shit like wearing meat dresses and showing up to awards shows dressed like a space admiral in Lord Xenu's galactic armada.
There was that Dutch or Scandinavian girl who sang "Lean On" by Major Lazor. She's not particularly hot, and she spent the entire video thrusting her crotch at the camera while Indian women danced behind her.
That Megan girl with the All About That Bass song isn't really there for her looks either.
How about La Roux? She's androgynous AF and she looks like Conan O'Brien.
Amy Winehouse wasn't famous for her looks, especially in her last few years as the drugs and alcohol really started to wear on her physically.
I would say it's probably never been easier for talented female vocalists and musicians to break out regardless of how they look.

She's not bad looking, but she just doesn't stand out to me, even when she attempts loud fashion statements. She's had a few songs I mildly like, but none that I really love.
