Looking for the correct genre terminology that includes fan favorites across a broad spectrum of fairly new media AND old classics in different categories such as movie/tv series, comic books, novels, games, etc.
Example: What category would Lord of the Rings, Stranger Things, Mortal Kombat and Alice in Wonderland fit in in???
Pop Culture just does not sound right to me (idk maybe it is).

I don't know if I know of a better term. Maybe 'topical culture' but that could be used more than one way. That could also refer to culture on a specific subject. Maybe 'mass culture'?

I would call your example above: "Fantasy Fiction." you could further modify it by "fantasy fiction in literature," "fantasy fiction in film." Your example is "fantasy fiction in literature and film."
If you're writing a long piece, you might introduce that specific example as "fantasy fiction in 'pop culture' history."
Sounds interesting.
