...that their botox and facial fillers are making them look like a hideous, plastic (and still rapidly aging) space alien? Why the hell do people do this to themselves? Gross gross gross. It's far better to look old than to look like a failed science experiment. I'm just not sure if it's more unkind to tell her the truth, or to sit back and watch her transform herself into the Joker. Thoughts?

She's my SIL, and we're not exactly close. I was just really shocked by her appearance. She's younger than me, but looks about 20 years older right now, and was almost unrecognizable. I'm not sure if complementing her appearance would help much, because she fixates on her appearance way too much already. She always has to have new clothes and manicures and hair coloring and on and on. High maintenance to say the least. I probably won't say anything to her, but I might mention something to my brother, that maybe she should stop injecting her face with crap before it gets any worse. I just don't understand why people do this to themselves. If you're healthy and fit, then you can be naturally beautiful at any age. Plastic just turns people into distorted freakshows. Ugh.

Ugh. her husband has the biggest power to “help” her (if she needs help). either by making her feel more beautiful (as this stemms from lack of feeling attractive or fear of loss of beauty) or by talking to her/ getting her councelling. I think thats your best bet if you want to go that path at all…

I think thats your best bet if you want to go that path at all… She had been getting therapy for other mental health issues, although I don't know if she still is. She definitely has narcissistic traits, and I'm sure that makes it really hard for her to deal with getting older. She has so many problems, it's almost unbelievable. But I agree with you, that it's probably best just to share my concerns with my brother and let him deal with her. After all, she's his responsibility, not mine. If he chooses not to do anything about it, then so be it. Thanks for your advice, Nora.

I don't give a rusty fuck what my sister in law looks like and probably wouldn't mention it either way.

I don't give a rusty fuck what my sister in law looks like and probably wouldn't mention it either way. I'm mostly embarrassed for her kids. I would be humiliated if my mother looked and behaved the way she does. And I actually feel sorry for her, too. It's just sad to see someone being destroyed by their own vices. I really hope her kids are wise enough to learn from all of her mistakes, and not repeat them.

One of my earliest memories is of telling someone like this that she looked like a monster. She looked shocked but at least I wasn't punished for it. Was she scary-looking!

Unless someone has suffered a disfiguring traumatic injury, or was born with severe congenital defects, then just stay away from the plastic. Nature knows best. The further we stray from Nature, the more we look like monsters.

I generally flee whenever she walks into the room, but the screaming might help drive the point home. Honestly, my first reaction was highly inappropriate giggling. She just looks so absurd. I can't believe that she actually paid money to look like that. But I have to admit, she has made me appreciate my own life choices more. She has always chosen greed and vanity and egotism, and I've always chosen simplicity and humility, and it's definitely reflected in our appearances now. It's funny how we grow into our faces, and our inner selves are manifested externally, too.

I understand corrective cosmetic plastic surgery to repair damage from an accident or surgery, but apart from that... Laughter lines and wrinkles are a sign of a life well-lived.

I don't have much wear and tear yet, but that's mostly because I have fair skin, so I've always protected my face from getting sunburned. The people who like to tan usually end up paying for it. But it's still better to own your wrinkles than to turn yourself into scary Barbie.

I also have fair skin - and as an Aussie - we were warned from childhood to take measures to avoid skin cancer... Slip, slop, slap.

IF she does not ask "How do I look ?" then .... You're probably right, but I'm not that great at keeping a poker face, so I'm not sure I can hide the horror on my face or stop myself from breaking into hysterical giggles again. I realize those two reactions might seem slightly contradictory, but I find absurdity extremely amusing, and this is off the charts. Maybe I'll just avoid her. That's usually the safest course of action.

If she's only your SIL (which isn't really a close relative IMO) and you're not particularly close then you should just say nothing. She's a grown woman and if she wants to make radical changes to her appearance then that's her right. I agree with you about the plastic surgery stuff being pretty off-putting by the way, but why get involved? It isn't as though it's affecting you in any way. If it was your daughter, wife or girlfriend then it'd maybe be different but I'd advise just to keep your thoughts to yourself on this matter.

If she continues down this path, then it probably increases the chances of them getting a divorce. They've had trouble for years now. But when women turn themselves into plastic monsters, they're not just ugly, they're embarrassing. She was talking to someone, and her top lip was so bloated that it was hanging down like a dead fish. I did a silent scream and had to turn away before I behaved inappropriately. It was really shocking. From the moment I met her, I always thought she was fake and plastic, and I guess now the outside matches the inside. Scary.

There could be deep-rooted psychological or emotional problems driving this behaviour of hers for all we know. Unlikely to be the sort of carry-on that a casual chat with a relative over a cup of tea will resolve.
