Even though I just watched it and read about it on Wikipedia, I still don't get it.
So here are my questions.
What was the job of Doc?
Why were there assassination attempts on Doc? Who was behind those?
I get it that Szell is a Nazi war criminal. But why were he and Doc meeting and why did he kill Doc at that meeting? Why were he and Doc and connected?
How is Elsa connected to Szell, if at all?
How or why is Janeway connected to Szell or why is he helping him and his henchmen?
Why did Janeway kill the henchmen and Elsa in the country house?
Where did all those diamonds come from?
Why is this a well known movie? Is it the dental torture scene that makes it infamous? I didn't find it all that disturbing.
Any help and any answers to what I recently watched is helpful.

Nazis in particular an evil dentist stole a bunch of diamonds from Holocaust victims. Various sleazebags wanted to keep the diamonds for their self and so they kept doublecrossing each other. Dustin Hoffman was an innocent pulled in because his brother Doc was a government agent that had been helping the evil nazi dentist cash in the diamonds in exchange for turning over other nazis in hiding or something. Doc was killed and the bad guys assumed Dustin knew what was up but he didn't.

Can we assume that the use of SPOILERS won't come into the answers any more than they came into the questions ?

Correct me if I'm wrong: What was the job of Doc? He was a government agent involved in working with a Nazi dentist to protect his diamonds. Why were there assassination attempts on Doc?Someone thought Doc was a traitor. Who was behind those?
His colleagues who thought he was a traitor, or Szell. I get it that Szell is a Nazi war criminal. But why were he and Doc meeting and why did he kill Doc at that meeting?Szell wants to know if it's safe to retrieve his diamonds, people don't like Nazi's Why were he and Doc and connected?Doc's job was involved helping Szell and protecting the diamonds. How is Elsa connected to Szell, if at all?
The government agency hired her to keep tabs on Doc's brother. How or why is Janeway connected to Szell or why is he helping him and his henchmen? Same agency as Doc. Why did Janeway kill the henchmen and Elsa in the country house?Getting rid of witnesses, he's a bad person. Where did all those diamonds come from?Holocaust victims teeth. Why is this a well known movie? Because people know it. Is it the dental torture scene that makes it infamous? It is particularly iconic. I didn't find it all that disturbing.
It hurts when teeth are drilled into.

Is it safe...to reveal all the spoilers? Maybe people who don't want spoilers won't open a thread explaining the plot of a film.

Is it safe...to reveal all the spoilers? For any movie as old as this or older, yes.

Can we assume that the use of SPOILERS won't come into the answers any more than they came into the questions ? Anyone can search and find it on Wikki and it's an older movie so spoilers no longer apply. Besides, I don't believe in them and will never use them.

I didn't think the dentist torture scene was great at all, it never appeared scary or tense.

That scene where Doc gets his hand in the wire. Yuck.
I did like Olivier's entrance when he washes his hands and asks "Is it safe?"
He really should have taken better care of his teeth though.
