He may have existed, but was he what the eventual stories made him out to be? Impossible to know, since there was no way of documenting any of the claims. No tape recordings, video, etc., only 'testimonials', not a very reliable source, and after centuries of interpretation and translation, they remain clouded in meaning. Not enough verifiable evidence (well, none).

Probably a apocalyptic preacher like several that existed in first century Judea.
The difference between him and the others is that he had a good PR agent in Paul of Tarsus.

St. Paul was originally hell-bent in stomping out His new religion, before joining it & preaching His Gospel. What could have possibly have made him change his mind???!!!

I've heard a couple of theories. One is that he had a stroke which he interpreted as a religious experience. Another is he never actually persecuted Christians, he just claimed he had to add weight to his arguments ("I saw the light and you can too!").

I picked a prophet. Whether he was divinely inspired I don't know but he seems to have believed he was and he seemed to have an idea for a better world if what we know of his teachings is at all accurate.

No. He had to overcome a lot of distrust among the early Christians, when he originally tried to join them (for obvious reasons).

To choose the option of false prophet, I will have to believe in the concept of prophet or there has to be a reference of a true prophet. In the long run what people make of Jesus is more important than what he actually was. Because it's almost impossible to verify someone from past (not just existence but supernatural claims).
That said answer to your question in my opinion is that Jesus may not have existed and it is a group of people that created a story. Even if someone by that name existed and was source of the story, the story might have been revised many times.

All the Apostles - not just St. Paul - travelled to different countries to preach His Gospel, & were subsequently martyred for their testimonies.

I'm surprised that NO ONE ever talks about the episode of "The Outer Limits" episode called "The Shroud"... Jesus Christ is cloned from DNA found on the Shroud Of Turin...
A scientist suggests that Jesus was just a very advanced human, the kind that some people say exist today, with ESP & Telekinesis and other advanced abilities...
Here is the full episode, directly linked to the scene mentioned above...
Religions claim that he was "The Son Of God"... But... WHAT IF... He was, just a very advanced human... That existed at a time, when primitive peoples always attributed such phenomenon as being magical or something holy, because they didn't understand what was happening?...
Much LIKE, the very similar concept, involving Arthur C. Clarke's quote: "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." (If you know what I mean.)... Any advanced human could very easily seem God Like, or be like "The Son Of A God."
