Highlights as in songs? Or in general? In general I’d say the most famous moments are the opening song (“ Phaaaaaaaantom of the Opera…”), “The Music of the Night” (“ Grasp it, sense it, tremulous and tender”—whatever that means), and the chandelier drop. As for best song, I’d say “All I Ask of You,” which may be warmed-over Puccini but still sounds nice and has a lyric that makes sense. Neither here nor there, but perhaps interesting: Lloyd Webber originally wanted Alan Jay Lerner—the lyricist-librettist of My Fair Lady, Camelot, Brigadoon—for Phantom’s lyricist. Lerner reportedly finished a lyric for “Masquerade” before bowing out because of the cancer that eventually killed him; as far as I know, Lerner’s “Masquerade” has never been released. A Lerner-Lloyd Webber Phantom, now that woulda been an interesting show, lemme tell ya.

Songwise. Thank you.
Even Lerner couldn't gotten around a major flaw of the original novel I think, which is that as a character Eric is way too negative as to trigger such intense emotions in Christine.
