What Films did You Watch Last Week (08/08 - 14/08) CLOSED

I'm going to take a break from tv shows for a bit, but I plan to watch Rebels next.

First Time Viewing

Army Of Shadows (1969; Jean-Pierre Melville) - After a strong start this movie about the French resistance in WW II went in a direction I did not particularly care for. I felt some scenes defied logic and despite the always great Lino Ventura I lost interest in the plot in the second half.

Clash By Night (1952; Fritz Lang) - A great cast, Barbara Stanwyck and a young Marilyn Monroe carry this otherwise tedious noir which has far too many dull fishing scenes.

Gambling Lady (1934; Archie Mayo) - An early role for Barbara Stanwyck as a gambler's daughter looking for a suitor. Stanwyck is good as usual, but the movie itself is just not that interesting.

Glass (2019; M. Night Shyamalan) - As a fan of Unbreakable I waited until now to watch this, since I had a feeling it was going to suck. Sadly it turns out I was right. It feels all very contrived and dull leading up to a final twist which is neither believable or good enough to justify the movie's existence.

Le Doulos (1962; Jean-Pierre Melville) - Elegantly shot film noir with a labyrinthine plot that I have to admit did not make a whole lot of sense to me.

Meet John Doe (1941; Frank Capra) - Barbara Stanwyck is stunning in this uplifting drama, but I could've done without the silly humor and Gary Cooper's performance felt a bit off.

A Perfect Enemy (2020; Kike Maillo) - Tiresome psychological thriller about a famous architect haunted by his past.

The Strange Love of Martha Ivers (1946; Lewis Milestone) - Underrated gothic noir with Barbary Stanwyck as a small town matriarch and Kirk Douglas giving his film debut, perhaps a tad long but still an intriguing story well told.

Wrath Of Man (2021; Guy Ritchie) - Surprisingly serious revenge thriller from Ritchie which is let down by its generic action scenes and an overly complicated flashback structure.

The House That Would Not Die (1970; John Llewellyn Moxley) - Charming old fashioned ghost story. Not particularly scary by today's standards, but it has some good atmosphere and Barbara Stanwyck is still a babe.

A Taste Of Evil (1971; John Llewellyn Moxey) - Another made for TV horror thriller featuring Stanwyck. Screenwriter Jimmy Sangster admitted, that he basically ripped off his own Scream Of Fear for this one which makes the movie a bit predictable for those who've seen the previous film and cinematography and direction aren't as good either. It's still a surprisingly nasty movie for its time though.

Gang Related (1997; Jim Kouf) - Jim Belushi and Tupac Shakur play corrupt cops who run into trouble after killing an undercover cop. This was Tupac's last movie, released after his death, yet it became a huge flop. While hardly a masterpiece it's an enjoyably cynical crime thriller with some unexpected twists and a fun performance by Belushi as a sleazy cop.

Sad to say none of yours this week, but The Strange Love of Martha Ivers has been on my radar for a while. One I need to check out.

I am the opposite. I think The Raid is much better executed than Dredd. I don't care much for Dredd and I had the same reaction to Dredd you had with The Raid - I found it boring after a while. Dredd was written first and probably began filming before The Raid.

Plan 9 from Outer Space I don't think is fun at all. I just think it is incompetent and not in a so bad it is entertaining way.

Beetlejuice is my favorite Tim Burton film. Ed Wood is probably my second favorite though/

Tenebrae (Dario Argento, 1982)

I only saw this in a heavily edited version which was missing about 16 minutes, I've been meaning to check out an uncut edition ever since.
