games like castlevania II, legacy of the wizard, goonies 2, shadowgate, startropics, and phantasy star for master system... Is that these games you can play them and not have any idea what to do next for a potentially long time? Which is definitely a good thing.
Which is something missing in modern games. And also the first metroid game is like this. It's the only metroid game that you don't know where to go , making it still the best metroid game.
And there's actually proof , that the first metroid is better than the super one:
You could play a rom hack of that game, a good one; and have the same sense of discovery that the first one had, even if you know metroid by memory. But, you can't do the same thing with the super metroid.
I've played one of the rom hacks of super metroid, and it doesn't have the same sense of discovery. (as super metroid the game from the early 90's)
Which leads me to believe that the way the original metroid works, is better than how super metroid works.
Hard to explain unless you've actually played both a rom hack of metroid, and one of super metroid.

I don't think not knowing what to do in a game is frustrating, which is why I'm not a fan of Castlevania II or the original Metroid. I actually gave up on the newest Metroid game because I didn't know how to proceed in the game, and when I looked at a play through, I missed a wall that I needed to break through.
