MLB is voting today on a plethora of rule changes. The pitch clock, 15 seconds if bases are empty, 20 in not. Ending the defensive shifts. Keeping batters inside the box and pitchers on the mound. I hope they vote all of them in. Even myself, a huge fan, is sick of the practice of 10 minutes between pitches. The batter steps out, readjusts his batting gloves (even if he didn't swing), adjusts his athletic supporter, scopes out the girls in the stands and moseys back in. While the pitcher takes four laps around the mound, studies the fielder like a general before battle, checks out the girls in the stands and moseys back on the hill. Watch a game from the 60's or 70's on YouTube and see how much more engaging the game was when this nonsense didn't happen. I guess I'm in favor of doing away with the shift. For the life of me, I can't see how a major league hitter can't adjust his stance and hit away from the shift. Hell, I could do it. But baseball doesn't have a sterling record of doing what it beneficial to the sport. Any word whether a throw to first base is considered to be a "pitch"?

I'm all for the pitch clocks and for keeping the batter in the box. You have to wonder, if rules like that were in place 20 years ago, guys like Nomar Garciaparra and David Wright (each of whom had a tick-fueled routine of adjusting their gloves multiple times, fixing their helmet, wiping their brow and flexing their forearms in between every pitch) might have flamed out in the minors. I'm not in favor of banning shifts though, that's kinda dumb. Jeff McNeil and Brandon Nimmo have no issue poking the ball through the infield holes, just because Ryan Howard's career ended over it means teams can't play defense? Yup. I am not for banning the shifts either. These are professional hitters. They should be able to poke the ball against the shift instead of aiming for the wall every time. Should but don't. Tom Verducci made an argument that influenced my thoughts earlier today. He said that every other major US team sport has put in rules to allow for more offense/excitement and that coaches look at ways to score more points. Baseball is the only sport that tries to avoid mistakes rather than take chances. I'd rather watch the mid-80s Cardinals than any team's offense today. The sport needs to engender excitement, and if teams are too concerned with minor win-probability advantages and thus play for boring walk/strike out/homer outcomes, then the league does need to engineer it. I have to say, I hate seeing balls coming off the bats of hitters from the outfield tv angle that for the first forty years of my life were assumed to either be base hits or amazing defensive plays being routine groundouts. Make the changes.

Resets the clock.
And the rules were approved.
I agree with Tom Verducci also. many in basketball were probably aghast at the thought of a shot clock. But I remember CBB without the clock nd it sucked.

Fans can now get onboard the Giannis FT train of mass counting down a rival pitcher yes? Good times. The players did this to themselves, the game has never been slower.
The shift ban is fine - they can move anywhere they like after the ball is released. Again, the players did this to themselves.
Bigger bases too. Sliding & tagging habits have changed due to instant replay.

Great to see Pujols win some huge numbers praise at the end. He wasn't going to threaten Bonds' tainted record, yet passing A-Roid is a nice career capper.

Damn! What crazy 9th inning Braves @ Mariners yesterday. Braves scored 5 top of the 9th to go ahead, but Mariners 2 HR in the bottom of the 9th to knock Braves out of 1st place.
