In 2012 a 40-year-old German man was stabbed with an umbrella by a stranger after leaving his workplace. The victim immediately confronted his attacker and even managed to get hold of the injection needle which had been applied to the tip of the umbrella. After contacting the authorities and undergoing extensive medical tests at the local hospital the victim was told by the doctors that so far they could not locate any poisonous substances in his blood, but it would take more time to rule out any infection or poisoning. 8 days after the attack the man began suffering from nausea, had to be hospitalised and soon fell into a coma. Only then did the definitive diagnosis arrive: He had been poisoned with a particularly aggressive and toxic variant of mercury, which is originally used for industrial purposes. Since it was already too late to treat the poisoning, antidotes would have to have been administered immediately, the victim was already beyond saving and died a year after the attack.
What makes the murder paticularly frightening and baffling is the lack of any apparent motive
11 years after the murder this cold case appeared on the German true crime TV show Aktenzeichen XY - Ungelöst, but so far it seems that the police could'nt come up with any new leads.
