This is an amazing band to me because they don't have any obvious influences. The web lists The Cure, Bad Brains, Duran Duran, Ice Cube, and The Smiths, but that is all so distant compared to most bands. The vocals and songwriting should get them into the R&R HoF easily. If not something is seriously wrong.

I quite enjoy Around the Fur, haven't listened to much else. As for the influences, maybe Tool? They actually came out a few years before Deftones did, and Maynard even guest appeared on of their songs:

What is the precedent for any of this? Maybe a little Smashing Pumpkins. Bit of Black Sabbath perhaps. A tinge of Depeche Mode? The vocals have no precedent that I can see.

I love Deftones, I think when talking about their influences you really have to keep in mind that this band is basically the clashing influences of Chino Moreno and Steph Carpenter. Carpenter is always trying to push the band heavier, he's up to playing a 9 string guitar on the latest album. Oddly, from what I've read he really only listens to hip-hop, but his ambition is towards bands like Meshuggah, Fear Factory and Chimaira. On the other hand you have Chino who is more the one who's into stuff like The Cure, Smiths, Duran Duran, and My Bloody Valentine. The result of that battle of influences is what makes them so unique, and while their most legendary album is and always will be White Pony or Around The Fur, the best example of explaining what Deftones are is Diamond Eyes. That's the album where both sides are best represented, it's Steph Carpenter at his absolute heaviest and Chino Moreno at his absolute most artsy, introspective and poppy.
