Pretty flawless I would say. I don't really have more to add, it's tremendous. On Spielberg's resume, I guess I'd still have E.T. his hallmark (wouldn't make my top 200), Schindler's List his masterpiece, & Jaws his greatest.
We can rate the sequels another day.

10/10 - When it first came out, it was the greatest movie I had ever seen. Blew me away. I must have seen it at least 5 or 6 times in the movie theater. ...It was truly ahead of its time.

10/10 - one of the all time best, perfect in every way.
When I first saw it, first week release back in 1981, both my brother and I were huge Star Wars fan and always argued who was Han Solo.
When we left the theatre that night, I turned to him and said "You can be Han Solo, I'm Indiana Jones now".

10/10. Either my first, second, or third favorite movie of all time (depending on which day you ask me). Today it's second.
If it were to be released in modern times, the masses would be in awe and shock of the achievement they just witnessed. The action is the best of all time.

10.
I like that it's a period piece.
It could come out tomorrow and be a blockbuster.
It's fun seeing Harrison Ford younger.
The only difference would be the gratuitous amount of fast cut editing and overuse of CGI.
There would be some annoying shakycam thrown in there as well.

A 7 for me. For some reason I don't enjoy it as much as I used to. The movie seems shorter, less epic than I remember it. And the submarine scene is indeed quite puzzling. Just how did Indy survive that?

Went to see it when it opened. Knew NOTHING about it. Watched the opening sequence in awe.
Then it became apparent that the whole "get the gold skull" was just the opening. I remember the WOW feeling seing that giant ball/rock !
Still re-watch it and it's still terrific. 10+

And the submarine scene is indeed quite puzzling. Just how did Indy survive that? When the Nazi submarine intercepted the Bantu Wind they weren't far off from the Nazi secret island, so the submarine never bothered to submerge after taking Marion and the Ark.

It's action bonanza, and yes there is huge loopholes in the story, but as a salute to old cliffhanger 13 parters, it workerd very well for me 8/10

Great FX and stunts staging and musical score and I liked how the Ark takes on the role of a character, however as a movie the story and characters are pretty bad.
Indiana Jones likes to dig in old tombs and young girls, he betrayed his mentor, causing him to leave with his daughter we assume, and who knows what awful things she had to experience. He is a loser--can't even get a treasure without a sleazy foreigner taking it from him.
Then he loses the Ark to the government.
The Indiana Jones character is a parody version of Charlton Heston's character in SECRET OF THE INCAS and no one mentioned this for decades (I collected Raiders memorabilia-they never mentioned it even once). He was not an original character. All they added was the whip and took away a neck scarf.
But let's examine the moral of the story: basically the Old Testament deity is a cruel maniac who likes to torture His creation (since we have to assume the Germans are also part of his creation and Divine plan). Even if we accept the official media story, that Hitler was a madman and crazy (for wanting to free his country from the control of foreign bankers and protect it from violent communists), who created him? God.
Who is the real crazy one, the creator or the created?

That poor misunderstood Hitler. "I have never been able to dislike Hitler. He has the face of a man suffering under intolerable wrongs. In a rather more manly way, it reproduces the expression of innumerable pictures of Christ crucified, and there is little doubt that that is how Hitler sees himself. He is the martyr, the victim. One feels that he is fighting against destiny, that he can't win, and yet that he somehow deserves to." ~ George Orwell

Hitler was born in the wrong time. If he were around today trying to start his movement, liberals in the UK would have made excuses for his bloodthirsty rabid desire to cleanse the world of those he hated. Then again he was very pale so he might not get propped up like others do.
