A number of fans were complaining about that after Multiverse of Madness was released, including Iman Velani. To be honest, I think that was a pretty silly thing for fans to get up in arms about. The simple explanation is that the MCU does not exist in the same multiverse as the comics, therefore, they’re both Earth-616 of their respective multiverses. I’m not sure why that’s such a hard concept to grasp. Just because the Marvel database claimed the MCU is Earth-199999 (seriously why did they choose that number?) doesn’t mean Kevin Feige is required to follow that.
The MCU is an adaptation of the comics, not a parallel universe. There’s no reason the movies should be forced to follow the rules of the comics. That’s way too limiting. Besides, there have already been a few things that contradict the notion that the MCU is in the same multiverse as the comics, such as America Chavez not having any variants and the fact that the Infinity Stones are shown to work outside of their home universe.

It's not about the number, it's about inconsistency. The fact that they announced two different universe numbers for the MCU speaks of sloppy quality control. That it overlaps with the Marvel main universe is further proof that this ship is slowly losing its tight management.
And the thing is, it would have been such an easy thing to fix it. Just invent a different number for the MCU. How hard could that be?

I vaguely remember this from Doctor Strange MOM now. It's just a marker to know they're back home. It's not like the MCU exists in another universe. It's the same as ours. Star Wars and the Big Lebowski happened in the MCU just like it did in ours; Killian from Iron Man 3 puts the Mandarin in league a Bin Laden or a Gaddafi.

Strawman argument. Nobody is asking for the movies to follow comic rules. What fans are asking for is for consistency and clarity within Marvel Entertainment, the parent company for BOTH comics and movies. Whether you agree with this or not is not relevant. You asked why people are upset about the 616 issue, I provided you with an answer. Just because you disagree with it doesn't invalidate the complaints. Personally, it's not a big deal for me, but I do understand where the complaints are coming from. |

Because they're clearly not the same universe. MCU Starlord doesn't act like 616 Starlord. MCU Valkyrie looks nothing like 616 Valkyrie, etc. Is this a big deal for me? No. But I do understand the complaints about it. |

Because they're clearly not the same universe. MCU Starlord doesn't act like 616 Starlord. MCU Valkyrie looks nothing like 616 Valkyrie, etc. Is this a big deal for me? No. But I do understand the complaints about it. Where does one see the 616 Starlord or 616 Valkyrie?
