The series premiered today with 3 episodes. Not sure if anyone here is going to watch the show but I figured I'd get a discussion thread open in case anyone does.

Pretty damn good so far.
This show (and Rogue One before it) really demolishes the talking points I hear so often of fans of popular franchises. Namely: The studio had to get someone who knows the lore inside and out (i.e. "Somebody who understands this property"), who will make movies "for the true fans" (i.e. fan service galore). Tony Gilroy really came in and was like, "I don't know anything about Star Wars, and I don't care what the fans want, I'm gonna make what I want to make", and it's been some of the best Star Wars stuff.

I've watched the three episodes and honestly I actually like what I've seen so far. It has a rough start but it picks up by episode 3, which explains why it started with three episodes.
The show as of now hasn't delved into fanservice, which is a good thing in my opinion and i really hope that they don't bring in any major characters from other shows or movies into this series, outside of maybe some small appearances from some Rogue One characters considering this is a prequel to that movie.
My issue with this new Star Wars stuff is it's reliant on fan favorite characters like Luke, Leia, Obi-Wan and even Boba Fett. This makes the Star Wars universe feel smaller to me and I wish we would get more new characters that aren't tied to the movies.

I watched all three episodes and so far it's the best Star Wars show I've seen since the Mandalorian.

Two episodes in, but I was all in 5 minutes into it. I guess it depends on how much you liked Rogue One, because it really captures the feel of that movie. It's Star Wars, but it's more like Star Wars-adjacent. It removes the more fantastical elements of SW and just tells a story about people struggling in a time of great galactic upheaval. It's adult sci-fi set in a universe that has always been a little more family-friendly.
The show still has a sense of humor, it doesn't get bogged down in self-seriousness. But it never feels silly. Even Mando can feel like a muppet show at times with Grogu, slapstick robots, etc. Everything about the production is top notch. The music, the design, the writing. The world feels more lived in. You watch Boba Fett or Obi-Wan and you feel like there are about 300 people in the universe. Cassian walks down the street to work, and it feels like there's an entire societal structure at play in this one scene. It's incredible. Rogue One and now Andor are as close to straight up space drama as Star Wars has ever gotten, and they're both incredible.
It sounds funny to say, with this being a prequel of a prequel, but this is the kind of stuff they should be doing. Stop focusing on the core characters (or characters that look like them), and get out there into the corners and crevices of this universe and tell those stories. The possibilities are limitless. Hell, even if they wanted to do a Star Wars farce, which Last Jedi clearly (deliberately even) was, there's room for that. Just don't ruin the core characters when you do it.
I'm excited as hell about the potential of this show. The stakes seem just as high for a character who we already know survives this adventure. Now that's great writing.

Yesterday's episode was a little slow, but I liked the expansion of the Skarsgard character. The moral ambiguity is off the charts with this guy, and I suspect it'll get even darker before all is said and done.
I'm enjoying the corporate vibe of the Imperials at the moment, it's great to get a look inside the intricacies of the Empire beyond the capes and wizards at the top. You can imagine the petty power struggles, corporate greed and political posturing that were going on throughout the saga, even on the Death Star (both of them) when it was destroyed. Can't wait to see what becomes of the security guy who had to go live with his mother after losing his job. (Again, did you ever think you'd see that as a subplot in a Star Wars show? I love it!) A climactic battle might be too cliche for this show, but I hope Cassian gets to kill that guy.
Cassian didn't have a ton to do this episode, but the scene with the tie fighters echoing through the canyons and then flying by was pretty rad. Just the sound itself. Also, I had to chuckle about a Star Wars character using the alias 'Clem.' Not a very Star Wars name, but hey.

This is one of the best shows on television right now, period. Maybe that's why there's not much talk about it here. Not much room for, "Kathleen Kennedy is ruining muh childhood!!!!"

Yeah I read about this the other day. I'm just glad it's already been renewed for season 2. Fans of quality sci-fi are more interested in Andor, whereas casuals enjoy the stuff like Grogu or focusing on legacy characters. Andor started off great and has held to its own standard so far, I expect the quality to continue.

If the show is as good as stated, then it would follow that there would be a lot more chatter about. The Mandalorian took the world by storm in 2019, and its viewership numbers remained pretty consistent, whereas Andor is showing to be inconsistent. There are also those in the Star Wars fandom who reject the product, no matter how good it is in terms of filmmaking quality, because it is still deeply rooted in the Disney and Kathleen Kennedy established canon that began not long after the rights were purchased, and that all roads will lead to the sequel trilogy.

This show is good. But it really needed to be a movie or all uploaded at once. It's a slow burn that works better on a binge.

The only thing that bugged me about the episode is that the Empire's plan with the prisoners makes no sense. Just shuffling a guy from one floor to another only works if he doesn't tell anyone, and you better believe he's going to tell people. At that point the prisoner literally has nothing to lose, and there's a 100% chance he starts an uprising. You're better off making up some bullshit charge and extending his sentence instead of pretending to release him, only to shuffle him in elsewhere in the prison.
