And he thought Hitler was the greatest thing since sliced bread. That prick actually advised Hitler to intensify the Blitz to bring Britain to the bargaining table. Churchill had to "exile" him to the Bahamas and told him if he didn't keep his Nazi mouth shut he would try him and shoot him if he had to.
German Foreign Secretary Joachim von Ribbentrop sent Wallis Simpson 17 carnations every day, even after she married Edward. And he was said to have still been sleeping with her. Makes you wonder what the pillow talk was...

Edward, like every other British monarch, had no real power. He couldn't have allied GB with Germany or even signed a Molotov-esque non-aggression pact. But he could have influenced popular sentiment to strengthen ties between GB and Germany, sour Anglo-American relations, made Britain less ready for war etc. would it have made a difference, who knows? Could GB have fought an all out war with Germany when the King was dead set against it?
To his credit, Edward really did love Wallis Simpson. Ribbentrop aside (no one knows when the affair ended), they were fanatically devoted to each other right up to Edward's death in 1975. And he never seriously consider setting Wallis aside and taking the throne. He really wanted to be King. He hated the idea that his brother G-G-G-G-George and his wife Queen "Cookie" to have the big chair. He also desperately wanted Simpson to be Queen Wallis. And he probably could have publicly split with Simpson, married another and produce an heir and keep Simpson on the side. But he wouldn't. But it was all for the better. George VI was a very good King, touring London during the Blitz. The Royal Family led a very spartan lifestyle during the War. Eisenhower related a story about the King. Ike was giving a briefing about the course of events after D Day to Churchill and George VI attended. It was a brutally hot day and Eisenhower suggested they remove their coats. Eisenhower was shocked. The King had an immaculate Naval coat withal the medals. But George's white shirt was a wreck. Battleship gray and the elbows were completely worn away so the Royal elbows stuck out. Churchill later explained that George had not purchased new clothes, other that outer garments since 1939 and some of his wardrobe was in tatter.

The whole irony is, if Wallis had never even been married in the first place, Prince David (Edward's actual name)would have had absolutely nothing to do with her.

Sources said that Wallis had certain sexual "abilities" that made Edward so devoted to her. Abilities she had learned in a Shanghai whorehouse. Of course, to the priggish Royal family in the days of George V, that might have meant leaving the lights on.

Just like a more modern person within the Royal family, who managed to make her way to the top position in the Royal Family, in place of a far more beautiful woman, who was supposed to be filling that role, right now.

A fun "what if". Suppose Charles had insisted on marrying Camilla in 1980 or 1981. He would have had the same decision as Uncle David. If he had done the same and removed himself from the succession would have made a disaster. Imagine the fun at Buckingham Palace when the Jeffrey Epstein mess came out and Andrew, Prince of Wales was involved? Would we now have Elizabeth's youngest son on the throne as Edward IX?

Ah yes. Actually, maybe if Andrew & Fergie hadn't divorced (the 2 of them have actually remained close right up to this very day, so that divorce actually should not have happened), perhaps the Jeffrey Epstein fiasco might not have happened (at least, not with him, anyway).

I've read the opposite. That they were quite devoted to each other, especially after the War. There probably was some "indiscretions" in the past. A lot of rumors of menage a trois or that Edward like to watch Wallis and other men. Whatever floats your boat, I guess. But they had calmed down when hey got older. No doubt Wallis Simpson wore the pants in the family but to the point of abuse, I'm not so sure. She certainly wasn't boring sexually. They never had any children, probably due to one or more abortions she had in the past. There were also rumors of her working in a Shanghai whorehouse (and paid very well) but that's bogus. I do know that she fell apart after Edward's death. She broke her hip and came under the care of a nurse who abused her, stole from her and wrote a nasty book about Wallis that was 90% BS. And Simpson slipped into dementia, giving her nurse and her lawyers more free reign to wreck what was left of her. Yeah, she was far from a pleasant person but her end wasn't deserved.
