'Paranormal Activity' rode the 'Big Brother' train to megasuccessville with a heady dose of 'The Blair Witch Project' for good measure.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Good one. A flop film that became one of the most culturally influential cult films of all time. One that springs to mind for me would be Silence of the Lambs. I'd also throw in any one of The Beatles films (Hard Day's Night, Help, and Yellow Submarine) insofar as these movies extended the already massive cultural impact of the Fab Four that much farther. To some extent probably Schindler's List, and even Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom; and also--last, but not least--E.T.

A bad cultural phenomenon but a phenomenon nevertheless

Ashamed it took me this long to mention it.
Especially after that 'Indiana Jones rip-off' thread we had a little bit ago.

Austin Powers (2 mostly) Napoleon Dynamite Borat Should note my response was built around the word "were". Movies like Wizard of Oz and Star Wars are still pretty culturally relevant. Could be overanalyzing, though.

Sure do, I remember it well. I was working as an usher at the time, and the place was packed on the weekends for this.
