Does anyone care at this point?
They tried an interesting approach to making more movies in this psudo-sequel type of way, and it kinda worked once and failed miserably a second time. Going back to do a 'direct sequel' now seems like very weak approach at this stage.

Exactly... I don't want another movie set in Space. That one was awful.. People have wanted a direct sequel for years. "Cloverfield lane" was decent. But no need to do another retread of that.

A giant CGI monster attacking a city with crumbling buildings and lots of locations and huge effects, etc., is a costly affair. The last one in space was absolutely terrible, but the notion of doing these separate stories in different genres with only a distant event connecting them was a very novel idea. It's just that none of the movies were particularly good. It was an interesting experiment, but it didn't pan out. At this point, it just feels like another way for studio to keep IP going so that the rights don't lapse or something. Going back to do a traditional sequel at this point seems particularly bereft of creativity. But maybe there will be an audience that cares. I just don't imagine that at this stage this title carries much weight.
