If it is a game not published by nintendo: Buy the game, only it it gets a rating of 'great' on gamefaq.com.
Because, the rating on that site go past great. Games can also get a rating of outstanding. But as far as I know, no game not published by nintendo gets a rating better than just great. Except for one exception.
I'm saying, the general rule of thumb for buying nes games: If it isn't published by nintendo it isn't worth playing unless it gets a great rating.
For example, here's why this system works. If you wanna play castlevania games, if you go by this then you'd only play 1 and 3. Therefore leaving out the least polished game of that series.
If it is published by nintendo and gets a rating of less than great. It is still worth owning. Because then at least it will still be a polished game.

This is...this is not great advice. Why do you put so much stock in GameFAQs? Why not play the games and then decide for yourself?
Dracula II: Noroi no Fuuin is still a very good game. Admittedly, the localization made things confusing with its "clues". However, the controls are tight, the music is great, there's a nice assortment of weaponry, and it mixes in just the right level of RPG elements for the Akumajou Dracula series. Personally, I think Akumajou Densetsu is a tad overrated and benefits from its release date more than people care to admit.
I'm betting I could come up with a fairly long list of Famicom and NES games that weren't developed by Nintendo but are worth playing and owning.
