the old era of video games? Because of the fact that, even if you don't like sports in general. Or tennis. Or sports games in general really. This game is still worth checking out.
Also, possibly the best sports game ever made.
It is possibly the most overlooked super nintendo game. It is like, the wave race 64 of the supernintendo.
Because it is the best tennis game, for the super nintendo. By the way it's obviously a game made by nintendo themselves.
However is it hard to get decent at this game? Yes, the first time you play it you will suck at it.

ST was okay. It was kind of fun to play. But I don't consider it to be the best tennis game of the 16-bit era.
The best is still Final Match Tennis for the TurboGrafx-16 (a.k.a. PC Engine in Europe).
It plays a much more realistic game of tennis but also has a touch of arcade elements to keep it fun. It's just a phenomenal game. Best tennis game ever made in my opinion. There's plenty of gameplay videos of it on YouTube. Not too long ago, people were still holding tournament events for this game in Europe and the game came out in the early 90s. That's quite astounding for a game that old.
Another great 16-bit tennis game was Jennifer Capriati Tennis (aka Grand Slam Tennis in some markets) for the Sega Genesis. It has male players in the game too. Its another game I would consider to be better than ST. But its not as good as FMT.

Personally I still don't even know what i'm doing in this game so far... but I can already tell this is a great tennis game. I haven't even printed an instruction manual for the game yet. Nor do I understand the rules of tennis in the first place.

One of my former schoolmates/friends was unbelievable at Super Tennis. I don't know how often he played it but he would put a nasty curve on his serve and I never stood a chance. I own the game but have never put much time into it. Seems fun at first but then I'd quickly get bored when playing the CPU.

In the comments, a user joked about it being a clone of Super Tennis with Arkanoid sound effects. And, actually, the sound of the ball being hit does remind me of Arkanoid. Other than the music and sfx, how is FMT different from Super Tennis? How is it better?

Other than the music and sfx, how is FMT different from Super Tennis? How is it better? It's completely different. Anyone that would compare the two hasn't played FMT.... PERIOD! Are you sure you're looking at the correct game? I've never seen anyone compare the sound of these games. For one thing, FMT actually uses real players from that era. Sure, the player names are in Japanese but you can get a translation. They play to their real style too, like McEnroe will serve and volley while Lendl and Agassi hang on the baseline, etc.. You can actually hit shots out in FMT, whereas you don't see that very often in ST. ST is more arcade while FMT is more simulation. However, FMT has some arcade elements to it like diving for balls, which I think happens a little too often in the game, and it's hard to hit the ball out when serving but beyond this, it plays a much more realistic game of tennis. I could go into more detail about the gameplay but it would be technical stuff about tennis and I'm not sure what level your tennis knowledge is at. I'll come back later and post the translation for the player names and I'll post a gameplay video too.

The cpu consistently kicks my ass in this game. I basically don't know what I'm doing inthis game yet. I'm lucky to score one point if that.

Ok, i'm back. Here's the player name screen on FMT, one with the translation and one without...
This is what the player select screen looks like with the translation of the player names -
And in this gameplay video, it shows the player select screen in Japanese at exactly the 8 second mark... the game was made by a Japanese company called Human Entertainment. Here's the wiki page on FMT as well. Notice how the "gameplay" and "reception" sections mention the realistic game-play of FMT like I did... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Final_Match_Tennis
Here's a gameplay video of Super Tennis... as you can "hear", the sound is totally different. Of course, old games like these are not going to sound all that good but for it's day and age, it was rather typical.

Super Tennis is an elegant masterpiece. I still casually play on/off the men's & women's tours with Meyer & Yuka respectively.

I can't speak on mechanics cause I've never played the former and it's been a long time since I've played the latter. Feel free to delve into the more technical stuff. My tennis knowledge should sustain me.

It may sound similar to Arkanoid but in no way, shape or form is FMT a clone on Super Tennis. It plays completely different. There are some emulators on the net that will allow you to play it. A Google or Bing search might find one. I used to play it on an emulator called 'magic engine' but it does cost money to play it on magic engine. Honestly, the only similarities between the two games is they're both tennis games that came out in the same year, beyond that, they're nothing alike. At least as far as gameplay goes, they're not similar at all. If you watch the gameplay video I posted, you'll notice that going 'down the line' is a harder shot to execute than going 'cross court'. This is true in real tennis as well. You'll see some really intense cross court duels in FMT just like in real tennis, but you just don't see this in other tennis games. Serve and volley was also a pretty big part of tennis back then, do you know what "serve and volley" means? If you watch some more gameplay videos, you'll see some serve and volley action by the AI and user controlled players. Again, you really don't see this very often in tennis games. Serves are pretty realistic too, you'll see aces and service winners in FMT. Again, for a 30 year old game, it's impressive for even today's standards, and it seems unique to FMT and not so much other tennis games. Anyhow, not trying to sound like an ass but I'm just wondering. Most peeps are not familiar with tennis terms, which if you are, you'll really appreciate FMT and the way it plays the game.

Arkanoid is an arcade game, released in 1986. The sound of the ball bouncing around in Arkanoid is similar to the sound of the players hitting the tennis ball in Final Match Tennis. Someone in the comments section for one of the YouTube videos noticed this and commented on it. Aside from that, they are obviously, two completely different games. I already have access to PC Engine emulators, so I don't need to worry about that. Maybe I'll download Final Match Tennis someday and give it a try. I appreciate you taking the time to explain some of the game play. Thank you. I do know what "serve-and-volley" means. You're right. It used to be a much bigger part of tennis until the mid to late 90's. You can still catch it being employed today, but there's so much more focus on baseline play and aces.

Anyhow, the only complaint I would have on FMT are the weird volley battles that happen when both players are at the net. They can be kind of funny. But I highly recommend playing it soon, it really is a terrific game. Let me know if you try it out, I always like to hear opinions on it. Plus, there is a way to adjust the skill setting on it too. The code is pretty easy to find online.

The code is pretty easy to find online. It's not all of the music in Arkanoid or anything. Just the one sound effect of the ball bouncing. I'm not the biggest fan of games in the Arkanoid series, either. There are some neat elements but I'd get discouraged by not being able to keep the ball in play for longer periods of time. I'll let you know if I try Final Match Tennis.
