It would pretty hilarious if Gunn really did cancel the sequel plans. After ten years “Cavil is BACK”… two weeks later “Nah, he’s not.”

A new deep dive from The Hollywood Reporter's Heat Vision newsletter adds even more context to that ordeal, revealing that Hamada had his own aspirations to bring Cavill back as Superman — and in a Crisis on Infinite Earths movie, no less.
According to sources cited in their report, "cameos in forthcoming DC movies of next year would have breadcrumbed to a giant tentpole movie inspired by the now-classic Crisis on Infinite Earth comics of the 1980s." In the hypothetical plan for this Crisis movie, Cavill would have returned as Superman.

So the guy behind Peaky Blinders was involved in a MoS 2 pitch: Man of Steel 2 has stalled out. It’s Kal-el with Kryptonite ankle bracelets at this point. Not going anywhere. But it was on the move ahead of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s arrival at DC, even though it’s unclear how far that specific incarnation would have gotten. Sources tell us Steven Knight, the creator of TV series Peaky Blinders and See and writer of movies Spencer and Eastern Promises, penned a treatment for the project in the fall. Unfortunately, it didn’t thrill Warner executives, who gave notes. (There's that word again.) Before things could go to the next level, which may or may not have included hiring another writer given Knight’s very busy schedule, Gunn and Safran were hired, and development promptly ended.view.email.hollywoodreporter.com/?qs=27dca022a3daaae65e34d5c9adf6995782cfc61eaab8e66bfca2252281f2c4f81e01033071a71a9c0ecc309f5e4c7262de4febdb0635727011fb3e07e2b20074e11fc572b6d036b7

This is why they just need to scrap the DCECUECU once and for all. They’re just constantly tempted to jump ahead to the end game in order to compete with Marvel. Even Marvel is struggling to make the multiverse stuff work with a decade of movies to build on.

As much as I like Cavill I think his version of Superman has run its course...unfortunately with very little to show for it. They really let that character drift off into limbo after that Man of Steel film. Hard to believe that was almost 10 years ago.
Whats even crazier is how DC felt like they were behind in 2013...and 9 years later it feels like they haven't even started.

According to a new report, former Warner Bros. boss Tobey Emmerich had been trying to replace Henry Cavill as Superman since 2018 before his return.

I find all of those suggestions terrible. For one thing, they all look like little boys. I know I'm getting older but geez, can't the character at least have some maturity?

Well, apparently the script that James Gunn is working on will be about a younger Superman. Maybe they'll give up and cast Liam Hemsworth.

I think that was just a bit of a cover to soften the firing of Cavill. I doubt they will cast anyone too young.

Well he's supposed to be SuperMAN not Superboy...but it is what it is. I'm just quite pissed that they let Henry Cavill go.
