Would people be more favorable to Maguire as Ben Reilly, then?! i might be metagaming it too much but i'd prefer Garfield due to my shared disdain of the Clone Saga and the ASM films.

I don't think they are that worried. They played it safe by introducing him in Civil War and letting people know he is in the good graces of that world now. They'll have to do the same thing with F4 if they get them back. They won't just make a movie of them cold. No but Spider-man is to Marvel what Superman and Batman are to DC. Its their number one hero. If the first solo outing of that hero in their shared universe fails it will hurt their universe. Im not worried about that because I liked what I have seen untill now but still, its a must succeed project. Number one hero in the comics. Not so much in the movies anymore. I think the MCU has gotten to the point that they really don't need Spider-man. He's a good addition, but he isn't their top character. Now if the movies were built more around him like in the comics (it was pretty much Spider-man, X-men, then everyone else) it would be different. With their last 3 outings, Sony screwed over the character in live action.

When adjusted for inflation, Spider-Man solo films outgross every single MCU solo film ever made: The Dark Knight WB $658,257,400 Spider-Man Sony $614,245,200
Spider-Man 2 Sony $531,803,300 The Dark Knight Rises WB $509,023,200 Superman WB $507,045,800 Spider-Man 3 Sony $432,402,300 Iron Man 3 BV $431,465,800
Captain America: Civil War BV $413,316,300

Notice I said not so much anymore. Meaning over time Spider-man's popularity dipped. And you have shown that proof. And that's before the MCU. What does it look like after the MCU started when it comes to The Amazing Spider-man movies? The Amazing Spider-Man Sony $297,713,000 The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Sony $215,371,800 Hmm... By the way, friend, those are just domestic. Even adjusting, the 1st Spider-man didn't beat out Iron Man 3 or Civil War.

Hopefully in Infinity War, Thanos will use the gauntlet to open a portal to other dimensions and force Garfield Peter to literally eat himself alive.
