I have been watching previews for T’ar , the fictional story of the first woman to become principal conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic, starring Cate Blanchette. I would love to hear from anyone who has seen it. I am intrigued, but deeply suspicious of Blanchette. I see a great deal of emoting, not likely to impress the Berlin Philharmonic, perhaps the ultimate boys club.
Along with this, any films in which musicians are portrayed in performance especially well? Conductors and instrumentalists all welcome as well as singers, operatic singers preferred.

Something like Paul Henreid playing the cello in "Deception"?

Richard Chamberlain as Tchaikovsky in Ken Russell's The Music Lovers (1971), co-starring Glenda Jackson. And one of my all-time favorites: Emily Watson as cellist, Jacqueline du Pré, and and Rachel Griffiths as her sister, flautist Hilary du Pré-Finzi.

The Conductor (2022). PBS documentary from the series Great Performances (Season 49, Episode 11). The title conductor is Marin Alsop who from the age of 9 had wanted to be an orchestral conductor and who eventually became the first female to be the lead conductor of a major U.S. city orchestra, Baltimore being the city. The famous Vienna Philharmonic, well known as not being welcoming to women members, had Alsop as their conductor. The film traces her life overcoming the Old Boy Network, struggling to be admitted to good schools and teachers. She does find a champion and mentor in Leonard Bernstein who supported and encouraged her, Berstein himself being something of an outsider by bucking the elitist classical music scene of the time by wanting to bring great music to the unwashed millions. A very worthwhile watch.

And from "They Shall Have Music" (1939) These are actual musicians , filmed while performing. These are certainly of interest since they provide a base line , a real picture of how very capable musicians look when performing. There is also Carnegie Hall featuring conductor Bruno Walter, Pianist Artur Rubenstein and Contralto Rise Stevens.

Marsha, Have you seen this one? A Late Quartet (2012) No but it looks fabulous. Man, Walken likes a challenge, playing cello And someone with Parkinson’s i realize the whole premise of this thread is probably offensive to actors. They are committed to the idea that they can appear natural and normal doing anything. But the fact is, our expertise, whether cooking, teaching, medecine, roller skating, is made up of millions of tiny precise movements that we decided to include years ago. The idea of anyone catching them all and reproducing them is insane.
