During WWII, a number of Hollywood actors eagerly enlisted in the military to do their part. Other actors remained at their studios to appear in military-themed films; some of them appeared in so many war hero roles, both at the time and long after the war, that audiences may have assumed they really were war heroes (and one or two let people assume, donning superpatriot personas for the rest of their lives).
One notable exception was an actor known for his modesty, who turned down all the roles offered to him that would require him to portray any kind of WWII serviceman. He stated, "If I'm too old to be called, I was too old for that kind of show." (Take that, Morrison). Who was this actor?
